Annan Athletic v Elgin City

Recommended Posts

Men against boys at Galabank today. A few players missing for Annan made a huge difference. Sometimes Annan's small midfielders look slick and tricky, but today they just looked weak and uninspired. No focal point with Muir & Nade both suspended didn't help.

Credit to Elgin though, Sutherland & Cameron were solid and ran the game, O'Keefe could do whatever he wanted on the left, Douglas was never stopping him. The first goal was coming and Elgin deserved to be ahead at HT. Annan started the 2nd half well but their heads were quickly down after 10 minutes without a breakthrough. The 2nd goal was inevitable and well done Elgin for seeing a wounded animal there for the taking and finishing the job off.

Very welcome if unexpected win. Must be a few years since we took all 3 points there. Home to Stenny this week who beat us at home earlier in the season. It looks like we took our chances yesterday unlike the past few months and hopefully it continues next week but we have had false dawns before!

Can't argue with the result that's for sure, & would generally derive from a 4 goal humping that the winning side's performance was comfortably the better of the two sides. Didn't go myself, but speaking to somebody that was there, they suggested that possessional dominance in the first period didn't actually lead to a great deal for Elgin, but turned it on a lot better in the second period.

Looking at the line-up before the game, though it was interesting to see Rory at right-back, & Coops at centre back, with three other defenders, including Daryl, on the bench. There's often been comment of late about a 'patched up' defence perhaps being an issue contributing to games not being won, so wouldn't have necessarily expected that to be the back four given the players that were available, but from the clean sheet it seems like they did a decent job, with Coops in particular having a good game. Will be interesting to see how Gavin plays it this coming Saturday.

Think Coops did ok at centre back against Cove and is his more natural position. Think Rory a bit wasted at RB but might have been a case of needs must. I think Darryl is carrying an injury so maybe why he’s not starting. Whatever a clean sheet is always something to shout about.

We were Inept. Worst performance of the season by a country mile. One shot in the first 10 minutes then capitulated to an impressive hard working Elgin team.

Hopefully this was a one off but showed the lack of quality in this seasons squad. Desperately need to being in some new (or even old!) faces in this transfer window.
