Hopefully the Iranians are more clever and patient than that though, and take the Americans being thrown out of Iraq as a victory. Trump could claim it as fulfilling his promise of taking the boys back home, and Iran would get freedom of movement through Iraq and Syria to Lebanon, no need for escalation. For most of the 19th and 20th century our involvement was overtly imperialist, although more latterly "protection of interests".
