He's injury cover, really. It does make a kind of sense. Jason Naismith has been knocked out through injury for six months. The remaining people who can play the right back position are David Gray (who is notoriously fragile), Tom James (who is shite), Steven Whittaker (who is okay playing anywhere *but* the wing) and Tommy Block (who's just a kid from the dev team who only switched positions a month ago and probably belongs on loan in the lower leagues). Paul was Player of the Year last season for his Mr Consistency and Mr Versatility tags. Never had a bad game and played all along the back four and wing back. Often deputised for captain. Kept that up this season. I would much prefer McGinn over Hodson - not that Hodson is a bad player - but Paul attacks more and pops up with an occasional goal. A backward step for me.
