In a plot twist that took even him by surprise, novelist Clive Cussler dies at age 88.

A Deep Six for poor Clive.

Got nearly all of the Dirk Pitt novels up in the attic somewhere.  RIP.

I note elsewhere that the world's oldest man has died...again.  That title seems to be a bit of a poisoned chalice tbh.

(Chitetsu Watanabe, 112, passed away at a nursing home in his native of Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture in northern Japan)

Miranda Ward, deid.

Everycunto knows Tony Blackburn played Flowers in the Rain by The Move as Radio 1's first song, but she was the first female voice on the station.

And.... She owned the gaff that Sandy Denny died in.... (Well collapsed and then died in hospital)

Ian Cathro of the Islamic terrorist world IMHO

I was surprised that they binned al-Baghdadi. He gave them their first taste of success in Europe, but didn't quite manage to build on the early promise.

They had a lot of teams scared at one point.

Week 9 update

One death this week. The former President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/26/hosni-mubarak-buried-with-full-military-honours

I was at university in 2011 when the Arab Spring happened and various North African dictators met sudden and brutal ends. At the time I had an extremely left wing geography lecturer who wouldn't shut up about the phenomenon, telling us it was a historic event and something the world had never seen before. The close of that article about Mubarak's funeral stands out to me:

Quote

Political science professor Rabab El Mahdi who took part in the 2011 revolt that toppled Mubarak, said his death was “a reminder of the failures of the revolution. It’s the end of a chapter with no closure,” she said. “A lot of history will be buried with him, with no accountability.”

Mubarak’s death comes months after Egyptian security services repressed brief anti-corruption protests against Sisi’s leadership, arresting thousands in order to stifle further dissent. Sisi swept to power in a military coup in 2013, buoyed by a military and security establishment determined to ensure that the popular protests of 2011 never happened again.

Aida Seif El-Dawla, of the Nadeem Centre for Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture and Violence, who has worked with victims of torture under both Sisi and Mubarak, said the latter “left behind someone who will outlive us,” in reference to Sisi.

She said: “I don’t know if it’s nostalgia, but compared with the nightmare we’re living now … during Mubarak it was tough, torture was rampant and people were in prison. But he and his entourage were political, so sooner or later they had to submit a little.” She described life under Sisi’s rule as “revenge for having revolted against Mubarak”.

Somehow I doubt that archaeologists in 5000 years time will be finding drawings of this guy on walls. A full obituary with more details about his military career and political rule is here: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/25/hosni-mubarak-obituary
