Week 45 update

Busy week this week. First up, Alex Trebek: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-54867011

Quote

Alex Trebek, the long-time host of American television quiz show Jeopardy!, has died at the age of 80.

Mr Trebek announced he had been diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer in March 2019.

The Jeopardy! Twitter account said on Sunday he had "passed away peacefully at home" surrounded by family and friends.

Mr Trebek had hosted Jeopardy! since 1984, and had received numerous awards and honours for his work.

Producer of Jeopardy!, Sony Pictures, led tributes to the "legend", writing in a statement: "For 37 amazing years, Alex Trebek was that comforting voice, that moment of escape and entertainment at the end of a long, hard day for millions of people around the world."

Known for his sharp wit and charisma, the Canadian-American presenter became the face of Jeopardy! during his three decades on the show, turning it into a ratings smash hit.

He fronted more than 8,200 episodes of the popular quiz show, making him among the most well-known people on television in the US and Canada.

In 2014 he set a Guinness World Record for "most game show episodes hosted by the same presenter".

It's a shame he didn't die the same week as Sean Connery, I could have posted this:

I spend a lot of time on American parts of the internet so I've seen people say "Suck it Trebek" and "I'll take ____ for 500, Alex" a lot and it means nothing to me. Him dying hasn't changed that.

Trebek died at 80 so he's worth 45 Base Points for @Arabdownunder, @Bishop Briggs, @Bobby Skidmarks, @Indale Winton, @Lofarl, @Ned Nederlander, @Raidernation, @sjc, @sleazy, @sparky88 and @The DA. He gets a Vice-Captain bonus for 68 points for @cdisaaccie, @Fuctifano, @Melanius Mullarkey and @sleazy, with a Captain bonus for @weirdcal who gets 90 in total.

Up next this week was a positive for Covid-19 as Peter Sutcliffe went: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/nov/13/peter-sutcliffe-obituary

Quote

Few people cast a more baleful shadow over postwar Britain than Peter Sutcliffe, the “Yorkshire Ripper”, who has died aged 74. He killed and mutilated at least 13 women and attacked many others over a five-year period before being caught and jailed for life in 1981.

Sutcliffe escaped justice for so long owing to a mixture of bad luck and incompetent policing, with many early clues missed. A total of 40,000 interviews were conducted during the hunt, and Sutcliffe was interviewed at least five times by the police. But he lied his way out of trouble each time.

He was also helped by a hoaxer with a Sunderland accent who called himself “Wearside Jack” and who, in 1978, taunted the police on a tape recording, sending them off on the wrong track by telling them: “I’m Jack, I see you are still having no luck finding me.” This led the police to discount Sutcliffe as a suspect because he had a Yorkshire accent; he went on to kill a further three women. The hoaxer, an alcoholic called John Humble, was not tracked down until 2005, when he was jailed for eight years. He died last year.

Quite the read. In the thread in General Nonsense for him there's a discussion about how his victims were reported on at the time. This obituary touches on the distinction between "prostitutes" and "innocent girls," and there's a slightly more in-depth piece on the Guardian's website today about why Sutcliffe viewed and targeted women the way he did.

There's also this picture which is real and happened. Poor Frank Bruno:

Jimmy Savile: Frank Bruno reveals how perverted DJ tricked him into shaking hands with Yorkshire Ripper - Mirror Online

Sutcliffe was 74 when he died, so he's worth 51 Base Points. He was a hit for @The_Craig and @The DA, a Vice-Captain (77) for @Sergeant Wilson and a Captain (102) for @Shotgun.

Up last this week was Des O'Connor, a man from the olden days of television: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54950051

Quote

The comedian, singer and TV host died on Saturday following a fall at his home in Buckinghamshire just over a week ago.

He was known hosting his own chat show, as well as Take Your Pick and Countdown - and for his friendship with Morecambe and Wise.

In a statement his agent said he was "well loved by absolutely everybody" and "loved life".

His long-time agent and family friend Pat Lake-Smith described him as the "ultimate entertainer" and said he had been recovering from the fall before his condition had suddenly deteriorated.

She said: "He was a joy to work with - he was talented, fun, positive, enthusiastic, kind and a total professional. He loved life, and considered enthusiasm almost as important as oxygen."

O'Connor died at 88, making him worth 37 Base Points. He was a hit for @10menwent2mow and @speckled tangerine, and a Vice-Captain for @choirbairn who gets 56.

Sad times, he had some great moments

That's 2 keepers involved in Scottish wins over them at Hampden dead today then.

Former St Mirren & Kilmarnock keeper Campbell Forsyth who was in goal for the 1964 1-0 victory, dead at 86.

He won't get a mention because of Clemence.

In an odd coincidence he was the only keeper to concede a goal to Ray's great rival Peter Shilton.

Where did you find out? Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else, one of the last of Killie's league winners :(
