Top tens of the 2010s

Tricky. Not just because of recency bias and memory issues, but also because I've not been paying attention evenly across that sort of time period. But I just came up with a quick shortlist of about twenty, so I'll need to whittle it down. (I've already removed Gangnam Style from the list, with just a slight sense of regret. I suppose I could still include it as the stand-out shitter instead.)

Streets of Fire - Symmetry (2011)

Myth - Beach House (2012)

Awful Sound - Arcade Fire/It's Never Over - Arcade Fire/Reflektor - Arcade Fire/We Sink - CHVRCHES (2013)

Red Eyes - The War On Drugs/Chamber Of Reflection - Mac DeMarco/Archie, Marry Me - Alvvays/Uncast Shadow of a Southern Myth - Parquet Courts (2014, c**t of a year to pick my favourite)

PPP - Beach House/Space Song - Beach House/Silk - Wolf Alice (2015)

Joe Gets Kicked Out Of School - Car seat Headrest/Threat of Joy - The Strokes (2016)

In Undertow - Alvvays/Dreams Tonite - Alvvays/Already Gone - Alvvays/Strangest Thing - The War On Drugs/Don't Delete The Kisses - Wolf Alice/Everything Now - Arcade Fire/No Longer Making Time - Slowdive/Oh Baby - LCD Soundsystem (2017, another great year for music imo)

Drunk in L.A. - Beach House/Tenderness - Parquet Courts/Hand It Over - MGMT (2018)

Heavenly - Cigarettes After Sex/Conversation Piece, 2019 Mix - David Bowie (2019, Cheating a bit with the last one there but nothing else has sprung to mind for this current year of music)

Shitter of the decade goes to Choo Choo by Mac DeMarco (2019)

I really wish they had combined their three albums into one.  There are only about three memorable tracks on each.  "Not" from their new record is fabulously Neil Young-like, but most of the other tracks are forgettable.  She's wonderful as a front woman though.

Absolutely agree.

Molly Rankin from Alvvays is my favourite indie band front lady though. emoji7.png

Well, I wasn't quite thinking that way - I assume it'd be a wasted vote on Adrienne Lenker anyway,

Bowie - Blackstar
Amazing Snakeheads - Flatlining
The Strokes - Drag Queen
The Fall - Lodestones
Daft Punk - Giorgio Moroder
The Fall - Dedication Not Medication
Lush - Out of Control
Bowie - Tis a Pity She's a Whore
Alvvays - Marry Me Archie
Amazing Snakeheads - Here It Comes Again

The worst decade for new and innovative music in my lifetime and so special praise must go to Gerry Cinnamon and Belter for being one of the most annoying tunes of the whole 2010s.

Terrible Love - The National

Jubilee Street - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Call the Police - LCD Soundsystem

Over Everything - Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile

Ben’s My Friend - Sun Kil Moon

It’s Real - Real Estate

Down Down The Deep River - Okkervil River

Ready To Start - Arcade Fire

Lampshades On Fire - Modest Mouse

Red Eyes - The War On Drugs

Edit - I’ll second the Stone Roses song as the shitter of the decade. It’s hilariously awful.

I haven't posted because it's taken me too long to think of the shiter. First, best songs by year as decided at the time:

Counterpoint - Delphic
Boy in the Backseat - We Were Promised Jetpacks
Follow Me - Muse
Big TV - White Lies
Every Stone - Manchester Orchestra
Singularity - New Order
Stumbling Down - RNDM
The Silence - Manchester Orchestra
Now or Never Now - Metric
VTr - The Twilight Sad

I was going to start listing other things I might have thrown into a favourites list, but it would have taken too long and defeated the point of the thread. I don't really want to spend too long dwelling on horrors from the decade I've forgotten, so rather than state the obvious for a shiter like Gerry Cinnamon or god knows what else I'd find (Blurred Lines has just popped into my head, I still remember seeing the video for the first time during Charlie Brooker's 2013 Wipe and being amazed and horrified that it was a real thing), I'll say the worst song by a band I actually listen to was Let the Records Play by Pearl Jam.
