A very good centre back that would walk into the current team. However, seeing Craig Levein play him at centre mid, at home, in a must win game against Serbia boiled my piss. Suffered from the Charlie Mulgrew falicy of thinking he was a cultured defender because he took 4 or 5 touches before launching it forward. Had no right to be playing in midfield. But played there for a good few games over his career and was a man down on each occasion. Also an utter p***k of a man (nope, still not over his recent managerial spell).
Comrie
Honestly Caldwell can never go into a worst team for that one goal against France. Went absolutely bonkers when it went in.
gannonball
A Gary Caldwell when at Celtic or first few seasons at Wigan would be our first choice centre half right now and most likely our captain.
Gordopolis
Weird to think he's only 37 and could probably still be playing. Had injuries been kinder and had he managed to stay in decent form, he could even have been involved in our current squad (I expect proper backlash for this comment - don't let me down!) -
skippy2015
He played some of his best games for scotland in the defensive midfield role. Strange choice to have in a worst 11. Webster Stephen Caldwell Russell Martin Paul ritchie Stephen crainey all contenders
Gordopolis
Russell Martin? He was part of the Strachan resurgence when we had a really tight defence for a good run of 10 games or so. No way he deserves to be in a worst xi Edit: I could pretend that my post was a joke, but I only realised when I re-read it that you meant Johnny Russell and Chris Martin, both of whom I wholeheartedly agree should be in the shiters xi
Savage Henry
I always thought Quashie was decent enough for Scotland? He was. That’s an insane shout. There are worse midfielders in the current squad.

craigkillie
Scotland won nearly every game Gordon Greer played. 11 caps, 7 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat (against France).
TheScarf
Greer was excellent for Scotland. Are people just picking players at random here?

Scumjob
How about a best XI since 1998? Gordon Hutton Weir Webster Naysmith Fletcher Lambert Ferguson McFadden Miller Maloney I did that in about 2 minutes so I'm sure (or hope) I've missed some others. -

Scumjob
Aye Webster was probably not the best shout. Any of those 3 a better option. A lot more worst XI options at the back than best XI over the last 20 years! -

It's just a shame he was approaching his mid-30's when we started picking him. Paul Gallagher Stephen Crainey - Grant Hanley - Lee Wilkie - Robbie Stockdale Jamie Mackie - Scott Severin - Gary Holt - Gary Teale Kevin Kyle - Craig Beattie Subs: Rab Douglas - including him is harsh maybe because he was a decent keeper and a very nice man, but of all the decent-to-good keepers we've had in my time following Scotland (i.e. Sullivan, Douglas, Gordon, Marshall, McGregor) he was the worst of a good bunch. Barry Bannan Paul Devlin Stephen McManus - controversial maybe, but I never rated him at all.
