HibeeJibee
Celtic's win last night is the first time a Scottish club has ever won a competitive game in Rome - capital of Italy. I thought I'd look at wins in capitals and the results surprised me in respect of their rarity: ... Amsterdam, Belfast, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Lisbon, Monte Carlo, Moscow, Reykjavik and Tallinn are the only capital cities where Scottish clubs have won more than 1 or 2 games in total. For many just a solitary win exists. ... no Scottish clubs have ever won in Athens, Belgrade, Bern, Jerusalem, Kiev, Madrid, Minsk, Paris, Prague or Zagreb; or ever won in Tirana (Albania), Baku (Azerbaijan), Tbilisi (Georgia), Astana (Kazakhstan), Pristina (Kosovo), Vaduz (Liechtenstein), Skopje (Macedonia), Chisinau (Moldova) or San Marino. ... wins in London have only been in neutral venue playoffs, Texaco Cup and FA Cup. ... Kilmarnock and St Mirren have played in Europe several times - but contributed no wins in capitals. In order to compile the list quickly I've assumed all away ties against clubs from capital cities were played in those cities - if they were moved they will still appear below. Conversely, any games moved into capital cities from elsewhere (other than playoffs or finals) won't appear. If anyone knows of such, or any mistakes below, do point-them-out. atfccfc
Celtic have twice played Jeunesse Esch of Luxembourg. In 1977 and 2000. The game in 1977 was Played at Eschs Small stadium but in 2000 we played at the National stadium. So Celtic have won in the capital of Luxembourg.

Looking through wikipedia I noticed CSKA played all of their 'home 'group games in Germany that season but played the qualifying rounds in Russia. Don't suppose you know the story behind that?

Don't suppose you know the story behind that? Political Turmoil in Russia, I would presume? By 1993 there were coup attempts and even Tanks firing on the White House - the Russian Parliament. The only other thing I could think is maybe the Russian Winter - Russia played summer football until the early 2010s.
craigkillie
My understanding from reading it before was that it was just down to the weather. These were in the days well before hybrid pitches and undersoil hearing.

Guest
Was Djurgarden v Hibs in 1955 not played at Firhill again due to weather?"Due to the Scandinavian winter, both matches were played in Scotland, with the Swedes opting to play their “home leg” at Partick Thistle’s newly floodlit Firhill ground. Hibs won 3-1 in Glasgow and 1-0 at Easter Road to reach the last four."

HibeeJibee
Updated with above info. I'd also omitted Old Westminster's 0-1 Queen's Park in 1883-84 FA Cup QFs, and Cliftonville 0-11 Partick in 1886-87 FA Cup R3. Nothing from Anglo-Franco-Scottish Friendship Cup of early 1960s nor from Anglo-Scottish Floodlight League of mid-1950s. craigkillie
A few more to add from me. Celtic beat Waterford 7-0 at Landsdowne Road, Dublin in 1970. Rangers beat Lillestrom 2-0 in Ullevaal, Oslo in 1979. Aberdeen beat IA Akranes 2-1 at Laugardalsvollur, Reykjavik in 1983. Aberdeen beat IA Akranes 3-1 at Laugardalsvollur, Reykjavik in 1985. Celtic beat Cwmbran Town 6-0 at Ninian Park, Cardiff in 1999. Hearts beat IBV Vestmannaeyjar 2-0 at Laugardalsvollur, Reykjavik in 2000. Rangers beat Anorthosis Famagusta 2-1 at GSP Stadium, Nicosia in 2005. And a few to remove: Motherwell's win over HB was played at Svangaskard, Toftir, not in Torshavn. Both of Rangers' wins over Valletta FC were played at Ta'Qali, Attard, not in Valletta. Rangers' 2-0 win over Steaua Bucharest was at home - the away leg was 0-0. Celtic's win over Dynamo Moscow in 2009 was in Arena Khimki, Khimki, not Moscow. I'm not sure if Lyngby counts as Copenhagen. It's in a different municipality, so I'm wondering the relationship is like Paisley to Glasgow. Likewise, Ta'Qali, Malta's national stadium, is in Attard, which is On the other hand, Celtic beat Ujpest at Megyeri Ut (now called Szusza Ferenc Stadion) which is in Ujpest, a district of Budapest. Stade Louis II is in Fontvielle, not Monte Carlo. However, Monte Carlo is not the capital of Monaco - it is a city-state, so Monaco itself is still the capital, and therefore the stadium does count as being in the capital.
Daydream
Interesting fact - the crowd for Dundee's win in Heysel Stadium is still the record attendance for the stadium. What a club.
