specialist subject - the bleedin' obvious

Recommended Posts

seems to be a relatively modern trait, that news reports are padded out with pointless 'facts' which anyone with the remotest grasp of common sense would be able to work out for themselves, at least as being 'the default obvious starting point, unless told otherwise'

three instances from today's news:

the shark attack on two blokes in Australia:

1) the two men 'were in the sea' - really ? yeah, ok - granted - Jaws-like boat boarding manoeuvres are possible, perhaps even sharknados, but not likely

2) 'the shark attacked one man first, then the other' - again, the shark could have carefully planned it's attack in such a way as to take on both blokes at the same time, or even injured them both simultaneously by accident, but that in itself would be newsworthy, not this more blindingly obvious scenario

the report on the Grenfell fire

3) lives could have been saved had more people been evacuated sooner - i know this is a broader point about the whole management of the incident, but - no shit !

any other P&B'ers somewhat tired of being force-fed 'news' that seems to have been edited for consumption by dullards, pre-school children or planks of wood ?

That's a nice Fawlty Towers reference in the thread title.

Nothing gets edited/proof read anymore, hence these (slightly) annoying items, but I think it's always been a bit like that.
Definitely worse than it used to be, some of the obvious spelling and grammar mistakes, especially online, are appalling.

Someone shared one on Facebook this morning from the Scottish Scum which falls into the stating the obvious / if your Auntie had baws categories.

"If Hearts had started this season the same way they had last season, they would be joint top of the league."

I remember having to watch a golf tournament.  Every time the putt went in the commentator said "he'll be happy with that".  Every time it did not go in the commentator would say "he'll not be happy with that".

I guess  commentators have to say something even when nothing is happening.

Sums up golf for me.

They have to pad out the bullshit stories they are putting up. Plus no-one pays for news any more so they can't afford decent folk.

A different but related gripe: how much of what's on the news do you really need to know about? It was breaking news the other day that a Russian soldier had shot a number of colleagues at a base in Siberia. Do I need to know that?

I seen the advert for the new iPhone when passing carphone warehouse. The Ad said something along the lines of our best iPhone yet. Well you're not gonnae come out with a worse 1 and if you did you certainly aren't gonnae say don't buy this shite..

Very hard to imagine that slogan had even a 0.1 effect on anyone choosing to buy the new iphone

Reporting Scotland is the worst for patronising presenters. The economics correspondent reads every story like he’s explaining it to a class of six years olds.

I have to say that most of the people I know who watch the news are a bit simple and could probably do with the simple explanation.

Certainly if you have intelligence you don't watch BBC or the news

Having taken to watching the SPFL you tube highlights I do have to say the best thing about them is no commentary.

Some of them are god awful and actually make the game worse but even the decent ones I don't need to tell me what I'm watching.

From Cove's tear stained match report after the Auchinleck game:

Ayrshire referee Kevin Graham could have sent off Talbot’s Stephen Wilson in the 53rd minute for blatantly kicking Cove skipper Megginson in the 53rd minute but chose to only book the home midfielder.

A news reporter on the British Airways Strike recently:

"Staff are striking on these given dates, but people are asking me what is this all about?....Well, it's about...money"

A stunning insight.

Strikes aren't always about money - they could also be about working conditions.
