Inter-Conference Centre

Recommended Posts

Minor footnote in the annals of Scottish football history on Saturday, when the first inter conference matches in senior league football (as far as I can tell) are played. From now until late February most of the First Division program consists of these matches, although there are some 'regular' games on derby days and to fit around groundshares.

While results apply in the respective conferences, it will nevertheless be interesting to see how clubs from each fare against the other, and perhaps post match reports in a single place.

Anyone know why those two games have been postponed?

Was wondering that as well. Think it's because Dalkeith & Haddington could be playing in Football Nation Qualifying Cup that day

Aye yer right 30th Nov is FNQ Cup day.

Still to be drawn.

Superb bit of fixture planning by the EOSFA, I'm impressed by this Inter Conference though my understanding of it is it is on a par wi Scotlands Euro Qualification situation.🤷‍♂️😂

Simple NB:

There are 2 conferences of 12. They play home-and-away for 22 games, and play each other 6 home/6 away for 12 games, giving an overall total of 34 games.

This means everyone plays 17 home/17 away and 23 different opponents in total; and plays everyone in their own conference home-n-away, and an equal difficulty from the other conference home-or-away.

Conference winners are promoted automatically. They play-off for the overall First Division title. Conference runners-up play-off for promotion. However if Premier Division would otherwise be 1 club short then both runners-up are promoted automatically.

However... if you want to feast on the technical detail...

I get a semi every time I see this, absolute genius! Pitty the East Juniors couldn’t have done something similar with their half-baked Superdooper League 🙄

Got to agree with this. I don't have a team involved in this but it is a creative, interesting, and sensible solution for this season. I'll be looking out for results. Good work by all those involved :cheers

Burntisland Shipyard 9-2 Stirling University EOS
Dunipace 7-0 Arniston Rangers
Haddington Athletic 1-2 Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts
Heriot-Watt University 5-3 Tweedmouth Rangers
Kinnoull 3-0 Easthouses Lily
Leith Athletic 2-1 Preston Athletic
Lothian Thistle HV 5-0 Coldstream
Ormiston 0-4 Dalkeith Thistle
Peebles Rovers 0-6 Edinburgh United
St Andrews United 8-1 Glenrothes

No real surprises but margin of Burntisland, Dunipace, LTHV and St Andrews wins raise my eyebrows; big Edinburgh Utd score too.

Leith prevail v Preston; Inverkeithing at Haddington.

So 'notionally':

Conference A    7-3    Conference B

Obviously with Conference A being at home today I expected them to come out on top but like you HJ it's the margins of victory that surprise.

Inverkeithing's win at Haddington was maybe the result of the day in the conferences and I can't wait for our trip there next week.

Most of the results went to the clubs with a higher position. As noted it was just scorelines that were more severe in certain games. The only positional upset going into the game was St Andrews v. Glenrothes. St Andrews were 7th in Conference A and Glenrothes were 4th in Conference B.

A8 Burntisland Shipyard 9-2 B8 Stirling University EOS
A3 Dunipace 7-0 B12 Arniston Rangers
A4 Haddington Athletic 1-2 B2 Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts
A2 Heriot-Watt University 5-3 B11 Tweedmouth Rangers
A5 Kinnoull 3-0 B10 Easthouses Lily
A1 Leith Athletic 2-1 B3 Preston Athletic
A6 Lothian Thistle HV 5-0 B7 Coldstream
A10 Ormiston 0-4 B6 Dalkeith Thistle
A11 Peebles Rovers 0-6 B5 Edinburgh United
A7 St Andrews United 8-1 B4 Glenrothes

I have to say 4-0 to Dalkeith flatters them. Ormiston certainly didn’t deserve to win, but conceding 2 goals in the last few minutes was frustrating. They’ve certainly not played to their potential yet, apart from vs Peebles.

Amazing game today as Saints should have been two or three up before they scored.

Some of the Glens defending was abysmal with their goalie dropping a corner into the net but given their league position this was a tremendous result today.

As I said earlier it should be a cracker at Ballast Bank next week.

I can't remember who it was but someone asked in the run up to the season if I would keep a table of the Inter-Conference play. I suppose to help illustrate if their was a stronger conference overall. I didn't fancy doing it as keeping track of everything seemed too time consuming. However, due to the way that NonLeagueMatters has had to arrange their Conference tables it's made things easier as I can just source the stats from there once they've been updated.

So the first Inter(toto) Conference Cup table looks like

HT Glenrothes 1 Leith 1

Glens dominated the first half hour and should have had more than one goal to show for their dominance.

Leith have come back into it since then although it took 30 seconds of dodgy goalkeeping to bring about the equaliser.

All to play for in the second half.
