A quick map search of the term ‘East Coast’ shows companies based in the inland Fife communities of Cowdenbeath and Oakley. It also shows an environmental engineering company called ‘East Coast Controls’ in the town of Kilsyth, not far from Glasgow. None of these three towns/villages are on the East Coast, not even that close tbqh. A search of ‘West Coast’ also shows companies based in Glasgow, Paisley and even Wishaw, so I’m not sure your argument stacks up. I don’t know, or care, what coast Greenock is or isn’t on, but your attempt at a ‘telt’ was hilariously bad. East Cost Controls were originally an Edinburgh and Aberdeen based company which consolidated and located to Kilsyth, coincidentally another part of the company was West Coast Controls based in Glasgow.
Sir Tarmo Kink
East Cost Controls were originally an Edinburgh and Aberdeen based company which consolidated and located to Kilsyth, coincidentally another part of the company was West Coast Controls based in Glasgow. That may be the case, but there’s still a company with the name ‘West Coast’ in it, located in Wishaw, which is nowhere near any coast. Same as Oakley and Cowdenbeath aren’t on the East Coast. The point being that you can’t argue Greenock is on the West Coast based on a couple of small companies with that name basing themselves there.

The point being that you can’t argue Greenock is on the West Coast based on a couple of small companies with that name basing themselves there. This is far too over simplistic. The reason this whole thing initially kicked off was because somebody once referred to VT as a West Coaster and he went in the huff, claiming that Greenock isn't on any coast. Instead, look at it as one of many a counter argument to his claims that Greenock is "nowhere near the West Coast". The key point here is that a considerable number of people would not make reference to the West Coast if they genuinely thought it was nowhere near them. The distribution of these company names reflect regional / cultural identities that are socially ingrained for very good reason. People in Oakley & Cowdenbeath consider themselves to be 'East-Coasters' because everybody there knows that the East Coast is just down the road. Similar can also be said of the west to a degree, and these company names that are concentrated along the Firth of Clyde to Glasgow area reflect this, some of which have websites that say very specifically "Greenock is on the West Coast". The combination of company names, people's own language in every day life etc etc show this beyond reasonable doubt and pointing out the statistically insignificant anomalies that could be the result of relocation etc does not change that. 1 hour ago, welshbairn said: Is London on the East Coast? Sir Tarmo Kink
I’m aware of why this kicked off way back, but you searching up ‘West Coast’ on a map provides no valid evidence that Greenock is on the West Coast when companies going by that name are present in Wishaw, Paisley and Central Glasgow. Simply picking and choosing which of these companies you want to include in your argument is enough to prove it invalid as well. As for Oakley and Cowdungbeath, they may consider themselves East Coasters (I have no idea if they do or not), but they definitely aren’t on the East Coast, regardless of how nearby the East Coast may be (not actually that near to Cowdungbeath which is quite inland). Greenock may be on the West Coast, depending on your view, but the ‘companies on a map’ argument and the ‘people from Oakley call themselves East Coasters despite not being on it’ argument are both pretty invalid when it comes to proving anything about Greenock.
