Diplomatic Immunity

Why does it exist?   Seems daft to me.

It allows diplomacy to continue even when countries are on the verge of war, if the rules are respected, which they usually are. AFAIK the Japanese diplomats in Washington after Pearl Harbour were allowed to travel home instead being waterboarded for everything they knew, it's a good principle even if some countries take the pish.

Has President Trump tweeted about this yet? The corpse of FDR must be preparing to be put on blast.

The media now has a name for the woman alleged to have fled the UK, and apart from the need to do the right thing her personal situation is now going to become intolerable.

I expect the US authorities will only accede to a UK extradition request on the basis that she will receive the mildest sentence available; were she from the Central African Republic or suchlike country however.....

Equally, had the lad who died been from an influential family more pressure would be applied.

So....

Boris is going to take the Harry Dunn case up directly with Trump.

Dominic Raab is taking it up with the US Foreign Secretary.

The Chief Constable of Northampton Police is writing to the ES Embassy in London.

Isn't great that all these cnuts can come on to the media, in the hope that their woolly words will make them look good and seen to be doing something?

As for Northamptonshire Police, when they interviewed Ann Sacoolas, did they just accept her story that she had no intention of returning to the US? Couldn't she have been charged then released on bail and made to surrender her passport? Or did they receive instructions from senior Gov/t sources that there was nothing they could do about this, given the suspect's status?

Much as I think it was cowardly and wrong for her to flee the country to avoid facing the music, some of the reactions have been over the top. Emily Maitless pretty well accused her of running away from a murder charge last night. The daft bint drove away from an American Base on automatic and on the wrong side of the road, thinking she was still at home. Happens regularly in the Highlands unfortunately. Not sure what the normal penalty for careless driving leading to death is, or if it would be called dangerous driving when totally unintentional, but I doubt it would lead to jail time.

Not sure you can seize a diplomatic passport...?

Last year Britain revoked immunity for the husband of a British UN diplomat after he was accused of beating her.

US reaction was one of thanks.  Not sure it'll be reciprocated.
