SSMAFL - 2019/2020 Season

Recommended Posts

Took in the St Pats and Nico's game today and although they lost a tight game was impressed with Nico's. Got an equaliser with a few mins left to make it 2-2 but then lost 2 goals straight after that, the 4th st pats goal being as good a goal as you will see this season. Well organised team and a few boys that were excellent on the ball. Reckon they would easily hold their own in the central

Yoker confirmed over twitter that they're folding. Player commitment stated as the reason.

Lenzie have a relief of fixtures for a season hopefully giving them time to re-build and come back stronger for the next season in division below.

In the Prem you've got East Dunbartonshire, Bengal and Shawbridge  carrying on their good form with good wins in the last few weeks, add to that list Glasgow South who've got a few results. Then there's UB United who has started slow but you know for a fact they'll be there when it counts.

Champ A see's St Rochs knocking back the wins consistently but an incredibly strong Maryhill thistle still doing their thing and yet to drop points. It's almost unfair on the other teams!

Champ B you've got runaway favourites Nicos performing well domestically and as noted above a good showing against a really strong St pats. I'm also hearing good things about Southpark.

Disappointing seeing teams fold when the going gets tough, especially successful ones, but that's amateur football I guess. Not for everyone when the times get tough and you need to dig deep.

Sorry to hear another team folding!!

Suprised aswell as Yoker seemed a team on the up, had alot of success last couple of season's. Like said it shows that no Club is safe from the difficulties in the Amateur game the now.

When players come up with the expectation of winning things, and they're hit with a realisation that it's not as easy as they'd imagined, generally their character is tested.

That's what happens to alot of these clubs who have success the previous year.

I can't speak directly on Yokers experience, that's just my general view. Alot of it is down to player expectation versus reality versus their strength of character and willingness to dig deep consistently for long enough to see a club through difficult times.

St Peters 1-3 Netherton.

St Peters look a much improved side from last year. Thought we managed the game very well especially 2nd half with 2 goal lead. Gave away a sloppy penalty but other than that happy with the 90 minutes performance.

St Rochs 1 - 3 Bengal Lancers
Glenconner Park (The Cage)

Strathclyde Cup Rd 2

For some reason they've made the pitch at the cage even smaller, so that was interesting.
Usual dry, uneven, clumpy surface.

1-1 at half time, quite a fair game. Both teams threatening at stages. St Rochs opened the scoring before Brian Hughes equalled shortly afterwards with a well taken turn and strike outside the box.

2nd half was pretty much Lancers. Change in shape managed St Rochs outball of Conor Irvine on the wing and we created a number of open play and set piece chances before a Brian Hughes headers put us 2-1 up and finished off with a Johan Cornell goal.

Next round we face the much improved Huntershill.

Been to watch Nicos a few times this year.  Few mates play with them - Jamie Pollock & Dan Tobin. Tidy outfit that play good stuff.
Watched them v Broomhouse during the week a few weeks back. Cracking game. Nico's better team just missing something - but had good few first teamers out - 2 Coakleys, Jamie Lindsay, Justin McWha and few others.

Manhattan Blacks tidy as well. Mate plays centre half for them - Marc Craney - very good players also. Leagues shaping up nicely.

Petershall Villa have called it a day as well which is a shame.

Agreed nicos are a very good side and theres a few decent teams in that league. Broomhouse are a good side had a few dodgy results since the game u watched vs nicos. Some very good players . Manhattan blacks are a tidy side I agree there. Saturday morning is getting better imo.

Played against some good teams from this set up in recent years, Maryhill, Uddingston and Southside (not sure if they're still going)?

If I stayed in the Glasgow area then I'd definitely be keen to join a morning team, get your game out the way early and the rest of the weekend is your own.

Do you play for Red Star

Glasgow South the dark horses for me. Seen them recently and have some outstanding players. If they can get there best team out they’ll match anyone.

Kirkintilloch RR at home for us tomorrow. Lost 3-0 to them a few weeks back and by all accounts was a dreadful performance from us. Hopefully bounce back with a win against them tomorrow. Pretty much a full squad to pick from which always helps.

Netherton 2-2 Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.

Shot ourselves in the foot big time. Came back from 1-0 down then sat off too much to hold the lead and didn't impose ourselves enough especially when Rob Roy went down to 10. Barring first 5 minutes and last 10 a very good performance from us but need it to be lasting the full 90. Much improved from the reversal a few weeks ago but feels like a defeat in all honesty.

From our last 6 games excluding the majors we're now onto 4 wins (one on pens) a draw and a defeat so definitely improvements hopefully continue to improve throughout our first season.
