Line up face Belgium

Recommended Posts

Two points:

1) There are actually some good options to come on from the bench... too bad we'll be 2-0 down by the time they do come on.

2) I'm not sure if it's a new rule that you must keep the same squad numbers for both games, but Scotland teams should always be 1-11 unless we qualify for something.

Will Snodgrass and Christie work back the way with the Belgian wing backs? Forrest was a no brainer tonight for that reason alone, never mind being one of our quicker, more creative and in form players.

As well as him and Fraser being able to get in behind the wing backs with their pace as it’s one of very few ways for us to exploit them.

Phillips is the current guy who keeps getting slaughtered for not playing out of position well enough, or for not being able to show what he can do in ten minutes of substitute time. Quite why Steve Clarke - who also has done very little of any note for Scotland, if that’s how we want to judge things - thinks Phillips is the best choice to play out of position up front in this game is beyond me.

He’s playing out of position, against Belgium, in a team with no width, and he’ll get hyperbolic nonsense thrown at him for not scoring. It’s like calling a guy a cart horse for not showing any flair when Strachan threw him on in the last ten minutes to chase 50 yard balls.

If James Forrest hasn’t got an injury, this is a very peculiar lineup from Clarke. It’s his usual narrow 4-4-2 against better teams, except it’s closer to a 4-6-0.

Except Forrest, 2 good games in about 30 caps aside, is utterly shite for Scotland.
