Fuctifano
I think the worst decision I ever made in a casino was going to one to see USA vs Scotland in a friendly in 2012 as it would be one of the few places showing the 1.30am Sunday morning UK time kick off after a few pints on the Saturday night. That said since about the age of 28 I've decided I'd rather continue a night in a casino than a nightclub.
Boostin' Kev
Never been keen on them, pretty grim places imo. If you've never been before probably best to enjoy the illusion of glamour rather than the reality.

No, you will most likely never be able to earn a living off of house edge casino games. You can play just for fun there. But I'd never recommend anyone to play on big money, cause house always wins in the end But who is your big team?
tongue_tied_danny
I much preferred the old casino in Dundee, beside the now demolished Hilton hotel. The new place is more like a late night pub with a few gambling tables. About 20 years ago I visited the Silver Star casino, which is on a Choctaw reservation in Mississippi. Quite an interesting place. It was quite far from the highway so you had to go up a fairly rural single lane track to get to it. There was this ramshackle gold rush style village of wooden shacks containing pawn shops and gun shops just outside. The place itself was like a mini Las Vegas. There were clusters of puggee machines with sports cars sitting on top. Beer was free if you were gambling. I just sat at the blackjack table placing minimum bets while quaffing as much free beer as possible. There was also live music. Wayne Newton was on that night. I was pretty pissed off when I found out James Brown had been there a few days before. I had a look on Google streetview and it has been done up and expanded a bit now. It has a better connection to the highway and all the wooden shacks have gone.

BillyAnchor
I know a guy who worked as a dealer in Vegas back when he was early 20s so probably the early 80s. He had so many stories, the one I liked the best was he was dealing and felt something on his leg. Looked under the table and a gambler was pissing on him. He was on a winning streak and wouldn't leave. They found out how much he was betting and decided to kick him out. If he had been a high roller he could have remained probably. Or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway. My friend would still when he stood up show his hands to the ceiling, he was so conditioned as a dealer that when you stood up you showed the cameras you were taking nothing away. This was close to 20 years later. Have any P&Bers been on a trip to an exotic place such as Nevada or Dundee and pissed on a dealer while playing cards?
Derry Alli
A poster on here got punted out a casino for (allegedly) counting cards.
BFTD
Best thing about the casinos in Arizona are the buffets. Never spent a penny gambling, but if you're in the neighbourhood anyway it's worth stopping off to have your lunch. And they're interesting enough to spend half an hour wandering around, if you're bored. The thing that surprised me most about Las Vegas was that the airport's absolutely stuffed full of puggies. Wonder if anybody's ever lost the wean's college fund before they even made it to the hotel.

Essentially, the mob opened up Nevada for gambling when it was outlawed in the other states. It still is, in most places. The casinos in places like Arizona are all on Native American reservations, where they have their own laws. Edit: you might remember they even outlawed internet gambling a while back. I think the main gripe the US government has with gambling is that it's traditionally used for money laundering, hence the mafia's involvement, and everybody knows they can just head over to the reservation when they want to lose their paypacket. It's quite funny that the US has something of an international image as the home of glamorous games of chance, when the vast majority of it doesn't take place on their land. It looks a bit stressful to me, very quick and no time to sip your drink and have a look around at players looking at their cards. More like a straight computer game. Was tempted to join @Busta Nut 's game on the Gambling forum the other week but watching it while I tried to join the table put me off a bit, as I'm usually a bit pished at 8pm and it looked a bit serious. Think it's still on if anyone's interested.

I play with mates online every Friday and some people have obvious patterns to the way they play which you pick up on after a while. Professional poker players presumably pick up on those patterns quicker and hide their own better. They'll also understand things like probabilities, pot equity, value betting, etc.
Cardinal Richelieu
Added to that, most poker "tells" a la the film rounders are just a myth. If you're so good at reading peoples' faces and body language that you can consistently tell what kind of cards they're holding, then you're wasting your time playing low stakes games with your mates or down the local casino.

invergowrie arab
You can make a decent amount of money playing online poker with Russians as they just don't fold and will keep calling waiting on their straight or flush. It's boring though as it essentially turns the game into a coin toss of whose hand holds up.
BFTD
This is interesting, but I'm still glad gambling's never grabbed me. It strikes me as work that, over the piece, I'd end up paying to do. Best of luck to everyone that enjoys it, though.

But of course, I don't mean that you should fell the same. Liquor in the front, poker round the back, m9.
