Kemal Karic: A truely touching story that started a Tartan Army Legacy

Recommended Posts

Firstly, Kemal Karic might result in a few "who?...." comments, but his backstory is really heart breaking, and the legacy that he has set has seen the Tartan Army Sunshine make 73 consecutive donations and hand over £100,000 to help children right across the World everywhere the Scotland national team has played.

Back in 1999 for the Bosnia v Scotland Euro 2000 Qualifier, a group of Scotland fans over in Sarajevo heard the story of a young boy called Kemal Karic, known as Kemo, whose mother was killed by artillery in Sarajevo, as she ran carrying 3 month old Kemal. Kemal`s leg was blown off just above the knee.

Fundraising by the Tartan Army for a prosthetic leg for a Kemal inspired the creation of the longstanding Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal.

Greater detail on this story can be viewed on the Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal website.

Aged 15, Kemal , finally visited Scotland to be mascot at the Scotland v Italy Euro 2008 qualifier match at Hampden in 2007.

Sadly the Sunshine Appeal has learnt this weekend that Kemo has been seriously ill with secondary cancer in his lungs.

If anyone would like to send him their good wishes, cards etc we are happy to forward his address if you pm us.
