Montrose vs Dumbarton

Recommended Posts

Montrose probably deserved a point there. They chucked everything forwards in the second-half, and only an outstanding late Brennan save denied them.

We had that wee bit of quality in the final third though. Layne went full poacher for both his goals and didn't do a lot else, but when he's winning games you can't really complain.

I thought Kyle Hutton was absolutely tremendous today. I wish he'd play like that more often, because when he's battering into 50/50s and not wasting a pass he's a smashing big player.

As for Montrose. Meh. They don't look dissimilar to last season. They play some smashing football, keep possession really well but seriously lack a goalscorer, and Aaron Lennox looked very shaky today. Blair Lyons looks a bit of a find mind you. He was absolutely excellent in the second-half.

Fair summary of the game. Layne didn’t do much other than score .. what we’d give for someone like that. Lennox was at fault for the first and nearly made the same mistake in the second half. Not convinced by him at all. Think we blew it with a crazy team selection .. which was corrected after an hour by which time Rennie, Callaghan and McLean had been hooked. We probably deserved a draw but couldn’t complain about losing either as we were awful in the first half. Officials were the usual bunch of incompetents. Toss up for the cluelessness award was between the lino giving Dumbarton a free kick after the ball had bounced a good foot out of play and Yano picked it up for a throw (even Duffy was gobsmacked) or when Brennan fell over when trying to catch a high ball and the ref gave a foul (not that it mattered as McLean wouldn’t have scored the resultant tap in anyway).

Team of the day nominee (via Chick Young) on Radio Scotland.

I’m sure he was great in his time but really don’t rate Chick Young, also hate the line about “you have to remember Jim had no players at the start of the season”  Jim had players, some decided to stay and others left for varying reasons he didn’t start with nothing.

A game of two strikers really.  Big Isaac gets two chances and scores them both. Big Crusty, all 6 foot 5 of him cant jump for a ball  higher than 5 foot 6.
How many chances is this guy going to get. His goal scoring stats say it all - 1 in a pre-season against Formartine.
We were woeful in the first half but when you leave your better players on the bench and play duds like McLean, that's what you get.
Things improved for us in the second half when the changes were made and we were pretty unlucky not to snatch a draw at the end.
Excellent header from Rossco crashed off the bar and a great fingertip save denied us.

We're missing a couple of our main players but if Petrie insists in playing that formation, we'll soon be cast adrift t the bottom. We've got some huge games in September and have to start winning or it's going to be a long and frustrating season.

Gutted about the result on sat, really thought that was going to be our first win.

Fair play to Dumbarton. I thought big Layne bullied our back line and you can tell he is playing with confidence.

We were extremely poor in the first half and it was probably the worst we have played in a couple of years.  Thankfully SP made a couple of changes and we were much better in the second half.  We did well to get the first goal and on another day we would have come back for a draw.

Did not understand SP's selection, Skelly has arguably been our best player in the last few games but he gets dropped, Webby was brilliant against Raith and he gets dropped, Matty Allan has been fantastic since he has come back from his injury but he cannot even get a sub appearance. The most mind-boggling decision is that McLean is still getting a game. It's a shame because he is a young guy but he has been with us since Jan and has shown absolutely nothing, he desperately needs to go out on loan somewhere.

A perfect example of when your confidence is high, you get the breaks. Brennan’s save was exactly the kind of thing a player can do when they have confidence.

It was a great save at the death and deprived us of a much needed point.
However, he had a couple of clangers in the first half and was extremely lucky when he dropped one then rolled about feigning injury and the ref gave him a free kick.
Lucky that it fell to McLean and he still managed to miss.
