You can't really go wrong with "classic" rock 'n' roll music, it's a fairly simple construct. My gripe is more with the over-familiarity engendered when those not really "into" the genre match up each name they hear with one song, and that's all they ever play on the fecking radio*. Examples (with alternatives*):

1. George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone (One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer; back to Wentzville; Gearjammer)

2. Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA (Rosalita, Thunder Road, Jungleland)

3. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven (Immigrant Song, Kashmir, In the Evening)

4. Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water (Burn, Stormbringer, Fireball, Highway Star)

5 Black Sabbath - Paranoid (Snowblind, Iron Man, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath)

*Yes, Absolute Classic Rock, I'm looking at you. Looking at you very disapprovingly.

** Just off the top of my head - all the above have a massive back catalogue to keep anyone satisfied, rather than some corporate fúck deciding what we really want is a triple header of Layla, Run to the Hills and Silver Machine. Again. ***

*** None of which are bad songs, just lazy on the progammers' behalf.

Because Springsteen dislikes this, does that make it good?

I hate purple rain. There , I said it.

This is the one that sprung to mind as soon as I read the title.  For me, a song that goes absolutely nowhere - never understood its popularity.

Tell ye what's better than Purple Rain?  November Rain.
