Whilst Liverpool should have beat Shrewsbury yesterday, the argument that players managed to play 60 games a season while smoking 50 fags at half time in the good old days is ridiculous.

It's perfectly reasonable to point-out the "ever more games" argument is nonsense, though.

There are 4 fewer EPL games than applied until 1995. It has taken 13 games to win CL since mid-1990s and when had 2 groupstages it took 17 (or 19 for English club starting in QR3).

Unlimited replays have been scrapped in FA Cup. All replays have been progressively scrapped back to Last 16. It takes 6 ties to win League Cup instead of 8 (plus replays).

Clubs not in Europe aren't playing up to 7 ties in a Full Members Cup as they did until early 1990s. From this season there is actually an winter break for the first time in history.

There is 1 fewer international during the season than was the case until a few years ago. While they are now all grouped in double-headers, this means an extra rest midweek.

Elite clubs' squad are comfortably bigger now.

Liverpool happen to be champions of Europe and so played Supercup and Club World Cup but obviously that's rare.

It’s new territory for the fa cup for a manager decides players won’t be available for a game and he won’t be attending the game.

With the Aston Villa situation it allowed Liverpool to take the piss and now continue to do so.

A fine does nothing so would just chuck them out of it, but the fa does not have the balls to do that

A club should be able to pick any squad they want. If the FA step in and decide to pick their team for them, it'd be an utter disgrace. Thankfully, that's not likely to happen.

It’s not likely to happen cause it’s Liverpool

Klopp is wrong on replays (IMO) although this is coming from. The perspective of a fan of a lower league team for whom replays are often highly lucrative for the club.
I can see his frustration as there are too many games in the calendar. 38 PL games, at least 6 Champions League games (now 8), the Club World Cup and whatever Carabao Cup games and FA Cup games the team lends up playing.  2020 is also a European Championship year where several of his players will also be.
Add in all the travelling too and there is very little downtime.
The apparent obsession with adding more games (changing the Champions League to increase games again), expanded World Cup and Euros and it is getting a bit annoying.
Yes the players are all professional athletes, but the amount of games being asked of them is beginning to reach an unreasonable level. The physical demands of the game are increasing as well - they are humans, not robots.
Additionally, I don't really think he's shown contempt for the cup per se; players need rested and if he'd fielded that line up in a league game the club would've been fined for fielding a weakened team and would have had a whole load of negative publicity levelled at it.
They can play three times a week no bother - but their levels will understandably drop.

What's the problem?

Victims of their own success but that should be seen as a good thing. We shouldn't be bending the rules to protect the biggest teams in Europe. The opposite should be the case.

I don't think the rules should be bent, I just think that in general there are too many fixtures.

This is essential reading on the FA Cup 'scrap the replays, start it in Spring' nonsense.

The real problem, as well know, is the Champions League. It's not just the fact the Champions League involves way more games than either the FA Cup or the League Cup. It's the fact there can be no domestic top flight fixtures played on a Champions League night.

It's a good article.

Basically where Klopp and Guardiola are wrong is claiming there are "more matches". There aren't... there are just more European and fewer domestic.

This was 1991-92's schedule... last season before EPL began. As it happens the Saturday dates are the same as this season. It's more crammed than it is today (no "winter break" either):
