Gilmour went through with it. Ouch. Good find, you couldn't make it up - Here is the text and link to the article: Quote Chelsea hierarchy tried to keep Gilmour before Tuchel sacking Graham Potter’s decision to leave Brighton & Hove Albion for Chelsea will have disappointed everybody at the Amex Stadium — but perhaps none more so than midfielder Billy Gilmour, who moved in the opposite direction before the transfer window shut. As the market drew towards a close, Gilmour did not have a shirt number and is believed to have been advised by then Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel that he was not part of his plans. Gilmour later received the No 35 for Chelsea’s trip to Southampton on August 30, yet there was an offer for the Scotland international from Brighton and Tuchel encouraged him to take it on the basis that playing under Potter would be perfect for his career development. Although the 21-year-old eventually headed to the Amex Stadium for around £9million, the new Chelsea ownership were less enthusiastic about sanctioning the deal and informed Gilmour during a meeting on deadline day that they would like him to remain at the club. Chairman Todd Boehly is thought to have suggested Gilmour wait for his opportunity at Stamford Bridge and implied, without going into detail, the situation could soon change. Even if Gilmour did not win a place in Chelsea’s starting XI, it would not be long until the 2022 World Cup break and then January presents another chance to make a switch. Gilmour, though, was adamant he wished to leave and, with neither party interested in another loan arrangement, he signed permanently for Brighton. A week later, Chelsea had dismissed Tuchel and appointed Potter to replace him as head coach in west London. It's all very convenient. If they wanted to keep Gilmour, they would have. There's definitely an element of face-saving here. The only party losing out here (other than Tuchel, obviously) is Gilmour. This is just an exercise in PR, as Chelsea have lost yet another promising youngster, and in a situation which looks badly handled by the club.
Jambomo
Let’s face it, what sensible person would be swayed by a Chairman who at the very last minute is full of “well maybe things might change” or “you can leave in Jan” ?? I still think that despite Potter leaving, which is a bit of a blow, being at Brighton isn’t the worst outcome for him. He’s still got much more chance of first team football, they are apparently looking for someone who is of a similar approach to Potter so the style isn’t likely to change drastically.

Agree about the club handling it badly, they seem to have done everything badly around this. Spending millions on Tuchel’s players when it seems that Boehly knew that he was going to sack him. Why not just sack him earlier when the season hadn’t started yet?

Not only that, but he could look at it from the perspective that he joined a fairly settled squad and as a newcomer, needed to prove to the manager that he was worthy of disrupting that for a first team slot. Now the whole squad is in the same position as him with the new manager coming in and it’ll basically be a clean slate for them all. Nathan Patterson similarly signed for a manager that then left. It’s a slightly different situation in that he didn’t have as much competition (basically just Coleman, who has been injured), but he’s now arguably the first choice right back at Everton.

Satoshi
The Athletic piece certainly indicates, as I suspected, Chelseas hierarchy were keen to keep Gilmour and rated him very highly, and that even on deadline day Tuchel looked vulnerable. Got to admire Gilmour for sticking to his guns though, the kid takes risks on and off the field. Defied Tuchel and went to Norwich, pushed for a permanent exit when the owner wanted him to stay. No wonder some of the self hating Scots hate him so much, probably spent their whole lives taking the safe option. If Gilmour had stayed at Chelsea this thread would have gone into overdrive about how he is wasting his career. The move to Brighton still the right call despite change of manager, little doubt to me Gilmour will make it as a regular player in the top 5 divisions. He backs himself, and so do many others it seems. -

craigkillie
I'm really not sure what that video is supposed to show, aside from a player with obvious talent struggling physically and having a 6/10 performance against a good team. Is it supposed to be claiming he was really good or really bad in the game, because I'd say neither. Gilmour's performance at the same venue against a far better England team was miles ahead of that.If someone was wanting to show a performance of Modric actually being good when he was young, the game for Dinamo at home to Arsenal in the Champions League a year earlier would have been a better one to pick.

Quentin Taranbino
The only outfield player available for all three games to not get a single minute on the pitch. He was our saviour last year
craigkillie
He's still very obviously going to be a huge player for us, he hasn't kicked a ball since June really so he's not fit. He'll get plenty of games at Brighton and will be a big part of what we're trying to do going forward.
accies1874
While he didn't get on, I did spend all of half-time just watching his kickabout. It was beautiful.

It's probably good for him to have expectation dampened to be honest. Hype really worked against him at Norwich and so hopefully people can just give him space to develop without calling him a wonderkid, world class or crap like that. -
Satoshi
Given Gilmours outstanding emergence on the scene hardly a stretch to call him a wonderkid. He will be regaining match fitness but there is three excellent midfielders in front of him at the moment. Still, it's not as if Brighton were making big bids for Kenny McLean. Gilmour will be the future and more time in the national squad won't hurt at all. Some Chelsea fans not taking his departure at all well, he really was so highly regarded there it seems. Credit to him for forcing his way out permanently like De Bruyne and Salah did, will be good for him in the long term. Chelsea meanwhile looked to have kept a couple of turkeys in Gallagher and RLC. https://tribuna.com/en/news/chelsea-2022-09-02-this-pains-me-too-much-fans-are-unhappy-over-one-deadline-day-saga-its-not-about-edson-al/ -
Jambomo
De Zerbi looks like an excellent appointment at Brighton. Players who have been coached by him previously have said how brilliant he is and his Sassuolo team contributed the most players to the national team from any of the clubs. Really looking forward to seeing what he can do with Gilmour, he sounds like someone who could get the best out of him. You can see that in keeping him in the squad despite his lack of game time, Clarke is showing the same faith and support in him that he showed Patterson. I like that, it’s good for these guys to feel supported and I think Clarke has only done it when he knows they will be a big part of the squad in the future. A ridiculous number from his team left for bigger clubs.
