Billy Gilmour

There were plenty on here saying get him in the side as soon as he made a few starts, and we had the usual folk (as we do now) saying "it's too soon, he needs to play more". He could probably have been bedded into the team maybe a year earlier. It's also completely false to say he "took some time" to decide whether to play for us or England, it took us time to ask him to play, but McTominay agreed instantly when called up by McLeish and even stated afterwards that he always wanted to represent Scotland.

Frank Lampard appears a pretty decent manager, was a top class midfielder and has an IQ score of 150. He also sees Billy Gilmour play every day. Do you think he's in a good position to critique Gilmour?

I saw an interview with McTominay a while ago, he was always going to choose Scotland.  It was never in question, he wants to play for us and considers himself Scottish, which is good enough for me.  Top lad and becoming a top player.

Heres a list of 18yo Scots capped in the last 10 years...

Kieran Tierney, Danny Wilson, Oliver Burke.

I think Gilmour would be older than Tierney but younger than the rest.

Knock it up to 19 and you can add on...

Grant Hanley, Steven Saunders, Andy Robertson, James Forrest.

Any c**t types the words "aye, he doesn't have the same quality of players around him like Chelsea"

Are we the only nation that thinks its a negative to play our best players, what the fucks that all about. Messi would have about 3 caps if he was Scottish, those 3  would be in dead rubbers. too see if he was good at the back post (defending).

C'mon Scotland pick yourself up from this negative shite.

Worth mentioning Lionel Messi wasnt capped until he was aged 18, the same age as Gilmour is now.

Messi had already made double figures worth of appearances for Barca, including Champions League games, and scored, before he was given a Senior cap.

And Odegaard played for Norway at 15 btw.  Just throwing that out there.

The after a few more caps mentally crumbled, lost all form at club level and went almost 2 years without another cap.

“Mentally crumbled” you weren’t his psychologist mate. There’s no way of knowing why he lost that form.

🤣 Looking back at that now its a good laugh.

I do remember bannan was highly touted at the time. Story's about transfers to man u and Tottenham were doing the rounds.

I'd have to say tho Gilmour is already miles ahead of were bannan ever was.

Part of an article where he admits the expectation of being at Real Madrid, and being expected to he a star every week, completely sapped him of all his confidence and belief, and how he needed a break from that pressure to find form again.

Shoving Gilmour into high pressure games, with a Nation expecting him to run the game, is dangerous if it goes the same way. He was chucked into Chelsea games against one of the worst sides of the league, and then a cup game against Liverpool where his direct opponent was Lloyd Jones, and most importantly, everyone wasnt demanding he stand out from the off.

He might well he stronger mentally than Odegaard, and I reckon he deserves his place in the squad, but the pressure on him would be massive. Scottish fans are hellish for turning on young players who dont instantly perform. Tierney, Robertson and McTominay have all had pretty vocal critics on here well past their debuts.

I don’t know if there’s more to that article, but from the bit you’ve quoted you’re making a fucking huge jump there considering it doesn’t mention confidence or his mental state at all.  It’s only saying people’s expectations are too high because he came from Real Madrid.

There probably will be some dafties expecting the world from Gilmour but I don’t see why that’s a reason not to include in the squad someone who looks like they deserve a place.

There are similarities with the Odegaard scenario, however there's a fair bit of difference between Odegaard, who made his debut at 15 and was world famous at 16, than Gilmour who's 19 in a couple of months. Don't think many 15 year olds would handle the pressures of International football combined with a move to Real Madrid very well.  Would be more similar if we/England were chucking Karamoko Dembele into a big game.

Its fair to say that the standard or Argentinas squad would be considerably higher than ours.

If Messi was Scottish he would have been walking into our team from the age of about 12.

Listening to the Ornstein podcast (the guy who wrote the article a few days ago about Gilmour being in the U21 squad) and he said a bit more on the situation.

Basically if Gilmour does get into the Scotland senior squad, barring a ridiculous amount of injuries he'll likely be brought in just to train and won't be involved in the game/s. Everything is being looked at as 'what's best for Billy's development?' They think him training with the first team Chelsea squad and getting games for our U21s is what is best for him at the moment.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Why would David Ornstein have any particular inside knowledge here? As far as I know he's an English football journalist who specialised in Arsenal stories.
Not sure. His source sounds like someone from the performance development side given the info he was discussing.

But he’s not just training with the Chelsea first team squad now

He’s actually starting games

Does anyone seriously think that the likes of McGregor, Jack or Christie would get anywhere near the Chelsea starting XI?

Of course they don’t. However I don’t think anyone has claimed any of the 3 of them would.
