Anytime I'm out and about I'll try and stop at a butchers if I find a decent one, I never buy steaks from a supermarket. You have Finlay’s in Portobello and Henderson’s in Bonnyrigg though? I can think of a few shops near us (chain and independent) who seem to be going along quite successfully, and they send out a pile of parcels at the end of every day. It might not be financially viable to do one or the other, but the money made combined presumably is enough to keep going. Doesn't help much if you sell services rather than goods, right enough. If that doesn't work, you can always use slaves as counter staff, and/or sell drugs under the counter. There was a model shop I'd frequent irregularly which had great stock, not just the mass market Airfix/Revell ranges, and a massive range of equipment and consumables. I say irregularly because it was a thirty mile drive from home in a direction I had no real justification for going in, but I loved to just browse in a proper model shop like we used to have back in the day*. I think I only ever saw one other punter in there, and did wonder how they could keep going. Then I found their facebook page, and saw the amount of traffice they get for their online auctions. Basically buying up modelers' collections (or "stashes") and drip-feeding them out a few at a time. Unfortunately, the shop has now closed, but it's more because the online business has taken off. The bricks and mortar side became an expensive commitment which didn't pay its way. There are a couple of specialist shops near me, but if they can't get what I want (and neither stock Vallejo paints), then it's online or traders at shows for me. I would have liked Nikki and the crew (and cat) to be still there for the face-face interaction (or "good old blether" as it used to be called), but that ain't paying anybody's bills. * Kilmarnock references: Radio Doctors, Upstairs at Scotch Corner, upstairs at Road Runner. None of them solely Model shops, but al had at least one member of staff who knew his* Esci from his Hasegawa. *And yes, all blokes. ETA: Those two shops near me, btw, aren't purely plastic model shops either. One caters to the Radio Control enthusiast, and the other does its bit to keep those weirdos who play with trains off the streets.
