Things have turned around significantly for Musselburgh 👍 But for Brian's suspension I think the manager would have gone for another unchanged team CJ.

Musselburgh passed Newtongrange off the park 1st half yesterday but didn't show up for the first 20 minutes in the 2nd, then the substitutes made a difference, particularly Evans who looked very lively. Overall, Musselburgh not at their best but a comfortable win eventually. Newtongrange look doomed. They were poor, their #9 Paterson aside.

Sorry, but just to add, The 25 mins or so Nathan played yesterday was the best for the season.

The 2nd half of last season, I thought Nathan was our best player. Although a good player, I don’t think he has replicated that standard  this season. Yesterday was different.

Nathan made a difference. I enjoyed his celebrations for his goal & assist, clearly showing how much it means to him!

Goal was ‘written in the stars’!

Nathan was warming up in the 2nd half, behind the goals, where a bunch of Burgh supporters were standing.

One of the lads asked Nathan when we were going to see a goal from him. He said no idea cause I never get on!

Think that must have been in his mind when the goal went in! Great run in and finish!

The assist was something else. Can’t believe the left back never went in. If that was Jordan or Michael, ball was away before he got up!

With two thirds of the season gone, Musselburgh Athletic sat 10th in the league whilst their opponents on Saturday, Newtongrange Star were bottom. Musselburgh were on a six match unbeaten run while their opponents had not won in the league since 23 November 2019.

An early morning inspection deemed the pitch was playable for a 1.30pm kick off at New Victoria Park. Burgh started the match with one enforced change following Brian Martin's sending off during the Hill of Beath game, resulting in a two match suspension. A change in formation to a back four, saw Conor Thomson come into the midfield.

Match kicked off at 13:32 and in the first few minutes both teams had an early corner, but nothing from either. The first goal came in 15 minutes. Josh Jeffries took a short corner which Declan O’Kane back heeled. Another back heel by Darren Downie and after a couple of seconds pause, the referee blew his whistle as the ball had crept over the line. One nil to Musselburgh.

From the kick off, ball came to Michael Moffat who passed it sideways. Unfortunately, Jono McManus slipped, leaving Paterson to in on goals. Jono McManus made a good recovery though and was able to touch the ball back to Paul Grant. On 24 minutes, Newtongrange had a free kick just inside Burgh’s half. A deep cross into the box by C Connor was met by Paterson, but his header went straight to Paul Grant. Two minutes later and another ball, this time by Porteous came into the Burgh box. Michael Moffat cleared for a corner.

With 34 minutes gone, Nelson played a great ball forward. Scott’s shot just went past the post. A few Musselburgh supporters on the dugout side initially thought the ball had gone in. From the kick out, Newtongrange had another attempt following a pass down the left wing by Swanney. Paterson moved into the box and his shot produced a great save by Paul Grant.

Burgh increased their advantage with seven minutes remaining in the half. Ball came to Darren Downie, which the big forward headed on. Mathu King chased the ball down, but was beaten by the Nitten keeper. However, all McCathie did was play the ball back from where it came. Darren Downie was quick to chip the ball from 34 yards into an empty net.

Into last moments of the half, Newtongrange captain Nelson saw Scott up front and attempted a pass. However a brilliant interception by last man, Liam Reid, foiled the attack and with that the last opportunity of the first 45.

Newtongrange had a lot of possession for about 12 minutes in the middle of the half, but apart from two real chances, their forward play was poor. Musselburgh played a lot of free moving passing and got two goals and a comfortable passage into the second half.

Half time: Newtongrange Star 0-2 Musselburgh Athletic

First 20 minutes of the second half and it was a different looking match in front of the expectant crowd.  Burgh players must had cocoa during the break while Nitten had energy drinks as Musselburgh seemed all over the place and you could feel the restlessness in the away support.

First Nitten chance came after Jono McManus miss-timed a header. Paterson ran in on the right hand side of the penalty area but his shot came off the outside of the Burgh post. On 54 minutes, Nitten had a free kick on the centre line. Ball came into the Burgh box and Porteous flicked ball forward. As Paul Grant came out, Scott nipped in and lobbed the Burgh keeper and deficit reduced to 2-1.

Burgh made a double substitution on 58 minutes, aiming to get control of the game again. On came Bradley Whyte and Nathan Evans with Jackie Myles and Josh Jeffries off.  Five minutes later, the same two players combined. From a free kick down the wing, Nathan Evans played ball into the box. A pass back by a Nitten defender was picked up by McCathie and unbelievably the referee let play go on. He must have felt the wrath from the unhappy Burgh support.

Another opportunity fell to Newtongrange. A Burgh attack broke down and ball was played up to Paterson, who ran in and tried to lob Paul Grant. However, the ball went straight to the keeper.  With 66 minutes on the clock, Nathan Evans made a good move up to the by-line, where a defender touched the ball out for a corner. However, the linesman signalled for a goal kick. Hard to understand as he was up with play. From there, the ball moved up the right wing. Scott went close when looking for the equaliser, but Paul Grant made a fine save to put ball out for a corner.

Approaching 70 minutes, Musselburgh had a free kick. Up it came to Conor Thomson, who attempted a pass to Darren Downie. Swanney managed to get his head to the ball to divert it away from the forward. However, Darren Downie got a heel to the ball and into the path of Nathan Evans, who ran into the box and smashed the ball into the net. Jubilation for the Burgh players as their two goal advantage was reinstated.

Conor Thomson was substituted on 73 minutes with Ross Larner on. Two minutes later, Nitten’s Duncan was yellow carded for a body check on Jordan Orru.

Coming up to 80 minutes, Nathan Evans chased the ball near to the Nitten box. As he got to the ball, Nathan Evans tumbled over, but managed to get back up before he was tackled. The forward ran past Ferguson; up to the by-line, where he cut the ball back and into the box. Darren Downie was there and hit the ball between two defenders and into the net for his hat trick. With three minutes remaining, Nathan Evans went close again with a lob which just went too high.

Full time: Newtongrange Star 1-4 Musselburgh Athletic.

Apart from an uncomfortable 20 minutes at the start of the second half, Musselburgh were always in control of the match. They commanded the midfield are, particularly in the first half with Declan O’Kane conducting all the moves. Declan O'Kane had a quieter second half, but Nathan Evans made the most of his time on the pitch with a stirring last 30 minutes. My man of the match would be three time scorer Darren Downie, who, on 25 goals, is now six ahead of second top scorer Mathu King.

Of the bottom five sides who played on Saturday, Musselburgh were the only winners. More importantly Burgh now find themselves in 8th place in the league, their highest position of the season. A good day!

Nathan has never been found wanting when he's came in, gem of a guy as well.

Agree Rob! We have a great set of players currently in the Burgh set up. Following a hard first part of the season, it is great to see the results now coming in.

A rise up the league plus a cup and a shield in the bag, this season must be seen as a positive for the club - particularly when survival in the league is confirmed (hopefully!!).

Burgh lost their first 8 away matches, were conceding too much and in bottom 3 for much of the early part of season. Certainly not what players and fans of Musselburgh envisaged at start of season.

In truth all I wanted was to go up to 12th and give ourselves a bit of a break from relegation thoughts. Following wee break just before Christmas, Burgh won 4 and drawn 3and we have transformed our season. Burgh are now in top half of league. Granted Jeanfield, who have pumped us twice this season, and Linlithgow have played less matches than Burgh, but we van be pleased where we re now!

Think a couple of wins from our last 9 matches, and Burgh can start planning for another season in the Premier League.

It has been some turnaround, Casey!  Musselburgh haven't looked back since the tail end of 2019, with it looking like your victory over us being the kick-start of your recent run. A relegation scrap looks to be a thing of the past, which is a great achievement, given how difficult it is to go on a good run in this league!

It has been a huge turn around.

Since the middle of November, Musselburgh have played 12 matches (including the Alex Jack Cup final and South/East Shield play off - both of which Burgh won).

So from the last 10 league matches Burgh won 6; drew 3 and lost 1 = 21 points out of 30.

In the previous (first) 11 matches; Burgh won 2 and lost 9 (7 away from home)  from 33 points

When you see that in black and white, it is pretty startling!!

Probably the saving grace was winning 5 out of 7 cup matches during that first period!

No game on Saturday for Musselburgh, but we do have a match tomorrow night - Wed 4 March 20

League Cup  2nd Round away to Tynecastle FC - kick off is 7:30pm

Tynecastle have had a phenomenal conference league campaign this season; winning 21 and drawing 2 of their 23 league matches. SO, it surely will be a tough match for both sides.

This is a game that will suit both sets of supporters as well as neutrals who follow East of Scotland football.

Tynecastle v Musselburgh; Wed 4 March; 7:30pm kick-off.

Match report will be done later today, but want to get this out separately.

We need referees or else the game is a goner! Better to have linesmen than not as they should be there to help ref - particularly in offside positions and when ball is played up the wing.

The officials baffled me on Wednesday night. Burgh player was booked in first half for a challenge in the Tynie penalty box, or for what he said to the Tynecastle player as he was on the ground. defender received treatment but as soon as he was off the park - he and the coach were shouting to get back on the park - so no damage done and we will say, for the benefit of this post, that the referee got the yellow card right.

But this is where it went pair shaped. One Tynie player in particular had 3 or 4 challenges later in the match - 2nd half/extra time. Ref blew for fouls each time but no booking. All I want is consistency. Book our player - fine; but the ref has to bring out his card when such a tackle happens again.

Both managers were booked - Ours' for directing something to the ref; theirs' for directing something at the linesman. Both times, the referee came over and booked the guys but never said a word to either.

Seemed he was more interested in verbals than bad tackles and didn't seem to want to engage with players/coaching staff at all.

First midweek match for Musselburgh Athletic in five months as on Wednesday night, the team made the short journey into Edinburgh to meet Tynecastle, a team flying in their league campaign this season.

Out of 23 league matches, the home side have won 21 and drawn the other two. They have scored an average of over 5 goals in each match, conceding just one. A number of Burgh fans were very complimentary of the ground which Tynecastle play at.

There were a number of changes in the Burgh line up, which is to be congratulated and gives fringe players a chance to show they merit more game time during the season. Liam Gregory started his sixth match of the season, Ross Learner, his second and there was a first start for Under 20 player, Ethan Wynne. In a reshuffle of positions Declan O’Kane dropped back to a defensive line up alongside Liam Reid and Ross Larner. As captain Mathu King started on the bench, Michael Moffat took the armband.

The match at Meggetland kicked off at 19:32. First chance of the night fell to Ross Larner, but his shot went straight to the keeper. Tynecastle were first to strike. From the home side’s half, the ball was played upfield to Ryan Cameron, who ran into the right side of box. Declan O’Kane tried to narrow the angle, but Cameron still managed to sneak the ball between Paul Grant and the nearside post. After 7 minutes, Tynecastle were 1-0 up.

Michael Moffat was having a fine game in his wing half position, making a number of good runs up the pitch. One, however, did not end kindly as a Tynecastle defender went down following a challenge. Michael Moffat must have said that he came down like a puff of wind. However, the referee heard differently and the captain was booked for his verbal as opposed to his tackle.

A couple of shots by Burgh players saw Jordan Orru’s effort go way over bar. Then Darren Downie hit a 20 yard shot past the post. The equaliser came in 21 minutes. Josh Jeffries played a good ball in from a corner kick and a looping header by Liam Reid, got him his first goal of the season and match all square.

Ethan Wynne was not overawed at all in the match and seemed to relish his midfield role. Michael Moffat made a quick move up the right and passed ball to Darren Downie. The big attacker then played a through ball and the Tynecastle keeper had to dive to collect the ball from a good strike by Ethan Wynne.

Ross Larner was next Burgh player in the book for holding back the centre forward. From the free kick, the no.9 bent ball round the wall, but Paul Grant made a fine save. Final chance of first half came to Tynecastle, the no.6 cleared by Liam Reid and ran into the Burgh box. The midfielder’s shot went by the post, when he should have put his side ahead.

Half time: Tynecastle FC 1-1 Musselburgh Athletic.

A couple of early efforts in the second half, both by the same player. The first was a back heel by Liam Gregory, which brought an easy save for the keeper. Liam Gregory also had a 20 yard effort which trundled to the keeper. Burgh got the lead in 57 minutes. From a kick out, Liam Reid controlled the ball with his chest, then played a sweet ball between players toward Liam Gregory. The Burgh midfielder played a low cross into the 6 yard box. Murray Jackson got down but could not keep a hold of the ball. From six inches, even with a defender close by, Darren Downie was not going to miss and duly got his 26 goal of season.

With that Liam Gregory and Ethan Wynne were substituted, with the latter getting a rousing response from the Burgh fans. On came Mathu King and Jackie Myles for last 32 minutes of match. From this point on; the match changed and Tynecastle got more and more possession. The left winger had a shot saved by Paul Grant. Then the centre forward beat Declan O’Kane to the ball and shot from 18 yards. Paul Grant had to get down to turn the ball round for a corner. As the ball came in, a weak attempt, again by the number 9, saw the attack nullified.

Jono McManus came on for Michael Moffat on 70 minutes. Couple of minutes later, Jordan Orru was crudely challenged by the right back and the defender received a yellow for his efforts. The free kick, by Conor Thomson, went straight to the keeper.Twelve minutes to end of match, Tynecastle with a corner. Played in, Ross Brady ran into the six yard box unchallenged and the header, came off the post and into the net to make the match all square at 2-2.

Final few minutes and a couple of chances for each team, neither coming to anything. Tynecastle were closest and on both occasions Paul Grant made good saves to keep Burgh in this cup tie. Whistle blew after 90 minutes;

Tynecastle FC 2-2 Musselburgh Athletic.

Into extra time. As an additional substitution is allowed at this point, Conor Thomson came off with a slight injury. On came assistant manager, Scott McNaughton, for his first match since 17 August 2019.

First real chance came to Josh Jeffries, with a great shot, which produced an equally good save by home keeper, Jackson. From the corner, Mathu King headed over the bar. The next forward move and loud shouts by Burgh players and support for a hand ball in the box. Referee waived play on. Tynecastle then went upfield and Paul Grant had to make another good save to keep Burgh level. With the end of the first period about to end, a cross came into the Burgh box, with Declan O’Kane jumping high to clear the ball.

Into the second period of extra time  and on 107 minutes, the Tyne left back’s shot went wide. Three minutes later and a glorious chance for the Burgh keeper, but it was squandered as Mathu King sliced the attempt and opportunity lost. Up went Tynecastle with the no.10 running up the right and made a good pass to the right winger. His shot should have been goal bound, but a weak attempt went straight to Paul Grant.

Last five minutes and another Tynecastle attack ended, with an interception by Declan O’Kane. Ball played to Jordan Orru, who had plenty of space in front of him, but the next touch was too heavy and Tynecastle cleared the danger. A minute later and a forward move by Burgh. Mathu King chased the ball, but the centre half got there first and he got the ball back to the keeper. Again, loud shouts by the Burgh fraternity went unrewarded as the referee did not agree it was a pass back!!

Three minutes remained and another attempt by Mathu King went awry when it looked like a winner was easier!

Whistle blew and the match went to penalties.

Burgh started first and four great penalties, by Mathu King, Darren Downie, Jordan Orru and Jono McManus secured the victory. Tynecastle scored their first, but their second came off the bar and Paul Grant made a good save for the third.

Musselburgh ended the match with tired players. Particularly with the last 20 minutes of the match and extra time, Tynecastle would have deserved the win, had a goal went in. However, Burgh dig deep and now await the third round draw.

Fourth played fifth on Friday night as Musselburgh U20s entertained Kelty Hearts U20s. This was Burgh’s 22 league match and they enjoyed a good February with two league wins and one draw. Kelty performed in similar fashion with two wins and two draws in the same period. Kelty won the first league fixture 3-0, back in October 2019; so, another hard match in prospect.

Match kicked off at 19:46. With six minutes on the clock, Kyle McFadden put a good ball into the box for Ciaran Young to chase, however, the Kelty keeper just managed to get the ball first. Up field and Kelty won a corner which the Burgh defence managed to clear.

On 10 minutes, Kyle McFadden, playing on the right, got another ball into the box. This time Ciaran Young got to the ball, but his shot skied over the bar. From the by-kick, Burgh regained possession. This time, Steven Stone ran up the right wing, passing a couple of defenders before putting in a low cross into the Kelty box. From a now customary tight angle, Devan Craighead smashed the ball into the net. Burgh U20s in lead by 1-0.

Kelty had a corner in 20 minutes. As it came over, it flew full pelt into their right winger’s face. After a couple of minutes he seemed to be fine. There were shouts from Burgh players for a penalty, in 23 minutes, as Devan Craighead’s cross looked to hit a defender’s hand. Nothing given, as Kyle McFadden’s shot was then blocked and cleared.

Devan Craighead had a solo run up the left side of the field. As he got into the box, Devan Craighead then planted his shot past the Kelty keeper and Burgh were 2-0 up after 29 minutes. Six minutes after and it should have been 3-0. The ball came into the box to Ciaran Young and even though there were three defenders in front of him, the midfielder attempted a shot which was blocked. The best option was a little pass to his left, where Devan Craighead had an easier chance to score,

Half time: Musselburgh Athletic U20s 2-0 Kelty Hearts U20s

Steven Stone picked up an injury and was subbed on 52 minutes with Ethan Wynne coming on. The first 20 minutes of the second half was busy, but without much goalmouth action. However, Kelty almost snatched one goal back in 69 minutes, when a great attempt by no.16 was tipped over the bar by Ross McRae.

First of two sending-offs in the match came after 76 minutes. Following a tackle between Kyle McFadden and the Kelty number 8, the Fife played put the head on to Kyle McFadden and was ordered off by the referee. After the incident, the same Burgh player was subbed, with Ewan Graham on.

Burgh U20s were awarded a penalty on 86 minutes when Kelty’s no.4 brought down Khasim Mdalasini in the box. The Fife defender received a second yellow for his efforts and Kelty were now down to 9 men! With only four minutes left, plus injury time, you would have thought that the captain would have handed the ball to Devan Craighead to seal his hat-trick. However, as the nominated penalty kicker, Ciaran Young stepped up himself and made no mistake to increase the lead to 3-0.

There was a chance for the likeable midfielder to get his third, but his shot a minute from time just failed to hit the target. A final chance came in injury time. From a Devan Craighead throw-in on the left side, ”Khasim Mdalasini showed short and left a gap in behind for Ethan Wynne to nip in and tuck it away”.

Full time: Musselburgh Athletic U20s 4-0 Kelty Hearts U20s

A big transformation between the two matches with a 3-0 home win by Kelty and now a 4-0 for Musselburgh. Unofficially, the man of match was James Pringle. However, there was a number of good touches by Bradley Whyte, playing his 2nd match in a row for the U20s. Devan Craighead was unlucky not to get his hat-trick, but he still made it clear he was the most prominent goal scorer in recent matches.

Like Bradley Whyte, another Musselburgh Athletic player stepped in to help the U20s. Special mention for Brian Martin who did the club proud with his performance. Not only did he assist his fellow players keep a clean sheet, but particularly in the first half and as and when in the second, he talked his way through the 90 minutes. He continually praised players, guided them as to where they should be and who to mark. Nothing detrimental; but more of a mentor, which the players must have benefited from. Possibly my favourite U20s match of the season!

After Burgh’s last match, against the Haws, someone referred to Olivebank as a half eaten chocolate gateau!

Four weeks later and the huge effort of George, our pitch looks in great condition! The centre third of the pitch is still very soft, but I never imagined there would be so much greenery around the centre circle.

Disappointed not to have the match on today against Bo’ness, but if the old pools panel was still around, I think the match would have went the way of Musselburgh by 2-1!

Two keenly contested matches already, but given the current run by Burgh, and home advantage, I couldn’t see us losing the match..

Hope. Bo’ness get their license when the SFA committee meeting eventually takes place and they then step up to the Lowland League. Who knows who would have won the title, had the full 30 matches been played.

Hill o Beath and Broxburn both had a chance, but even if they won matches in hand, Bo’ness would still be top of league. Having beaten HoB twice in league + drawn twice with Broxburn, as season ended due to Covid-19, I think it was right that a team was rewarded league title by EoS, so given above, I have no grumble with decision made.

Into 2020, most teams played 5 or 6 matches, Musselburgh winning 4 and drawing 2. This was 2nd best in league, with only Broxburn doing better (5 wins and 1 draw). This put Burgh in 8th place and at last, we were showing others that on our day we could be a match for any team within the league (apart from Jeanfield! 😏). At end of campaign, had it played to a conclusion, I think we would have finished 8th or 9th. Having lost the first 8 away league matches, it was a great 2nd half to the season.

That and gaining entry into next season’s Scottish Cup, by winning the Alex Jack Cup and beating Mid Annandale means that latterly the club can be pleased with the campaign.

Three good signings for 2020-21 and the majority of players looking like they are remaining at Olivebank, whenever the new season starts, I think the Burgh squad have a great chance of doing even better in the next campaign.

Musselburgh and Penicuik, for me had a strange season. From what I seen, both far better teams than several results would suggest.

Funny thing was, that after 21 matches, we still hadn’t met Penicuik this season, nor Broxburn. So although both were higher in the league, given where we were, I am sure tight matches would have occurred.

Preparation work has now commenced on installation of floodlights at Olivebank.

Hard work starting with excavations for foundations, with 4 floodlight bases being sited on terracing behind dougouts and two on either side of cover enclosure.

Lots of hard work ahead, but hopefully we will join our near neighbours Tranent and Haddington who completed their work in last 6 months or so. I see/think Whitehill Welfare are not far behind this.  Hope works at Olivebank and Ferguson Park go to plan and leads to SFA licenses being approved for both clubs come end of 2020-21 season.

Hopefully get your licence as soon as possible. Would love a draw against mussy in the Scottish.

Maybe your wish comes true in the coming season. Although without a licence, Burgh will be in the draw given the Alex Jack cup win and play off win against Mid Annandale.

Floodlights installed in past few days at Olivebank.

Still a lot of work to be done to be sure we meet all the required categories in order to get the SFA license at end of next season.

At a time when we still do not know when the season will begin, at least this news gives the Burgh fans a bit of a boost.
