Musselburgh U20 met Civil Service Strollers (CSS) U20 at Pinkie Park on Friday night. Musselburgh started the night in 10th place in league; one point behind their opponents.

CSS kicked match off at 19:46. With 20 seconds gone away team had a throw in, but lost the ball soon after. Burgh played up the left wing and a pin point cross into the CSS box by Daniel McBay, found Jack Crombie, who placed ball into the net. Great start to the match for Musselburgh U20s!

Lead only lasted eight minutes. CSS U20 had a free kick on the left hand side of pitch. Ball came into the Burgh box, but was cleared away. However, from 25 yards, Tom Davies hit a beauty of a shot past the Burgh keeper, Ross McRae and into the net. Goal of the season contender for Tom! Musselburgh U20s 1-1 CSS U20s.

On 10 minutes, CSS had another chance, again from outside the box, but Brodie McNab’s shot went past the Burgh post. Seven minutes later came third goal of match, CSS attacked down right side of pitch. Ball switched to the left and Cammy Fraser smashed ball into corner of the net. Another cracking shot and CSS now led match 2-1.

After CSS U20s second goal, match took a bit of a dip. Burgh did have a chance of an equaliser, on 28 minutes but Daniel McBay’s attempt went over the bar.

Half time:  Musselburgh U20s 1-2 CSS U20s.

Soon after second half kicked off, Devan Craighead was booked for a foul on a CSS U20s defender. Burgh’s first sub came in 64 minutes, when Connor Fitzpatrick came off, with new recruit, Reece Willey, from the disbanded Haddington U20 team coming on. Next attack for the home side brought the equaliser. Gary Ewing got a touch to the ball, which fell to Jack Crombie. His pass fell to another ex-Haddington player, Dean Burgess, who lobbed CSS keeper, Woods and ball landed in the net. On 66 minutes, score 2-2.

With 70 minutes played, Ben Tracey ran up the left wing and into the Burgh box. His pass found Davies but the shot went by Burgh’s post. A minute later and Tracey again had possession of ball. This time his cross was met by Walker, who headed wide of the Burgh goals.

On 75 minutes, Burgh took the lead. What looked like a cross from Ethan Wynne; the ball was met by Devan Craighead, who made no mistake from within the box. Now 3-2 to Burgh. Just after the goal, Dean Burgess was replaced by Josh Whitson (3rd player from Haddington U20s).

Into the final seven minutes and Daniel McBay went close for Burgh. Daniel beat a couple of CSS players, then his shot from the edge of the box was saved by Woods. End to end football as CSS then attached and were awarded a free kick. The ball came into the Burgh box, but Daniel McBay blocked shot. Ross McRae was then brought into action by saving a shot and Burgh still led 3-2 with five minutes of play remaining.

Final goal of match came in injury time. Daniel McBay tried to play a one-two, but it did not come off. However, two plays on, ball returned to Daniel. With his back to the goals, Daniel quickly turned and his shot hit off the post and landed up in the net.

Full time Musselburgh U20s 4-2 Civil Service Strollers U20s.

On Saturday, Dundonald were visitors to Olivebank, which was Musselburgh’s 13th league match, while the away side were playing their 11th. Dundonald started the day in fifth place and Burgh were down in 14th, with 9 points (10 behind their rivals).

With no matches played last week, Musselburgh made three changes to their cup final line-up. In came Michael Robinson, Michael Moffat, and Nathan Evans. Out went Paul Grant, injured in warm up; Bob Wilson, injured in training and Jack Gillan, who was on the bench.

Match kicked off at 1.30pm and early exchanges were quite even. First talking point came in eight minutes. As Nathan Evans chased the ball at the far side touchline, Dundonald’s centre half Wilson (previous Burgh player) came in late, with a crunching challenge, which sent Nathan Evans crashing to the ground. The Musselburgh supporters were unimpressed with Wilson’s tackle. A free kick was awarded and though the referee spoke to Wilson no yellow card came out!

Three minutes later and what poved to be a contentious moment in the match. Wilson and Nathan Evans again went for the same ball, with the Musselburgh player falling to the ground. The referee immediately blew for a free kick and to Wilson’s astonishment, he was shown a red card. Dundonald players, coaches and fans were up in arms, claiming it was not even a foul. From where I stood, first reaction was the referee made the right decision. However, later footage of the incident, confirmed that no foul was committed.

With the away side down to 10 men, Musselburgh set up the free kick, just outside the Dundonald penalty box. As Connor Thomson started his run up, the defensive wall jumped. However, Conor Thomson’s kick was low and the shot went into the bottom corner of the net. Following the goal, Dundonald's centre forward Smith was booked for his continued protest about the red card incident.

With 13 minutes played, Musselburgh led 1-0.

Two minutes later, Dundonald had a chance to equalise, but Burgh keeper, Michael Robinson made a great save to keep score at 1-0. As the ball rebounded out of the goal area, Michael Moffat put in a crunching tackle. Some Dundonald fans were apoplectic as the match continued. However, Dundonald player just carried on with match.

On 22 minutes Dundonald equalised. From a by-kick, Smith headed the ball on. Cargill ran towards the ball and played it round an out-coming Michael Robinson. Then from a tight angle, Cargill shot, with the  ball going  between Michael Moffat and the Burgh goal post. Ball landed in the net and 10 men Dundonald levelled match at 1-1.

Three minutes later, Ness nearly put the away side in the lead, but again, Michael Robinson came off his line to block the ball and it went out for a corner. Nothing came of it. Then on 30 minutes,  Musselburgh had a corner. Conor Thomson’s cross landed at the feet of Jono McManus, but his attempt went just wide of the post.

From the by-kick, Musselburgh regained possession. Conor Thomson passed ball and either Darren Downie’s shot came off the ground at an angle or was deflected by a defender. In order to save the shot, Lennox has to change direction and stretch to keep ball out of the net. Into the last five minutes and Ness had another long range effort which sailed over the bar.

Half time: Musselburgh Athletic 1-1 Dundonald Bluebell.

Four minutes into the second half, Musselburgh’s Darren Downie beat Lennox to the ball but his shot was saved on the line by Wallace. Another attempt soon after by Burgh’s Jackie Myles went over the bar. A couple of moves later, Musselburgh’s captain Mathu King and Dundonald’s other centre half Mackie chased the ball towards the touchline. As the ball went out, the defender appeared to nudged Mathu King who collided with the pitch barrier and took a hefty fall. Mathu King received attention from the physio for a grazed thigh and his head which was covered in mud.  A yellow card at least should have been awarded to Mackie, but it was hard to believe, that I do not think the referee even awarded a foul!

On the hour, there was a wee stramash in the Dundonald box, which resulted in a yellow card for Michael Moffat. Just after, the referee approached the Dundonald dugout and one of the coaches was also shown a yellow card. Burgh’s first substitution saw Liam Gregory replace Conor Thomson on 65 minutes.

Two minutes later and Declan O’Kane appeared to elbow Dundonald’s Rogerson, who fell to the ground.  Rogerson retaliated by pushing Declan O’Kane. Only punishment was the yellow card which was awarded to the Burgh player (lucky not to receive a red). Surprised that Rogerson did not receive a yellow for his actions. In what was becoming a bad tempered affair, Burgh defender Jordan Orr, was tackled late. While a free kick was awarded; again, surprisingly, no yellow card was awarded.

On 75 minutes, Jackie Myles was replaced by Bradley Whyte. Following this, Michael Moffat had an attempt on goal which was saved by Lennox. Then, a cross into the Dundonald box was cleared, but only to Michael Moffat, who controlled the ball with his chest, then went by a Dundonald defender. Michael Moffat’s cross was met by Darren Downie, who kicked the ball forward and down towards the ground. The effect was that the ball bounced past Lennox into the net and Burgh led 2-1 with12 minutes remaining.

That was the final goal in the match. Musselbugh’s 2-1 win, did not move them out of the bottom three. However, with other results, only four points separate Crossgates, in 8th place and Sauchie in 15th. Very tight in the lower half of the league.

Musselburgh’s won on Saturday against Dundonald shows that on any given day, there is not that much difference between teams in top half / bottom half of the league.

Burgh have only won 4 league matches this season. But they have been against 2nd placed Camelon, 5th place (at time of match) Dundonald, 2nd placed (at time) Linlithgow - who would have gone top, had they won, and Sauchie who at time were bottom. Musselburgh also beat Bo’ness on way to winning the Alex Jack cup.

Musselburgh’s biggest defeats have been at Hill of Beath and at home against Jeanfield - one team in top half, one team in bottom half.

The race to the title is probably still going to involve 5-6 teams, whilst at moment those who could be relegated, include Crossgates, who currently sit in 8th place!

Good to have such an open / competitive league to play in. Musselburgh must now ensure we win more than we currently do, to move away from bottom 3. Not an easy task, but certainly an achievable target.

Not sure I want it to continue like this!

Love my club and am sure we will be okay come end of season, but scary to think we are almost half way through season and still in 14th position! On our day, we are as good as any team in the league! But we can also be one of the worst - 0 points from 7 away matches is the worst statistic in East of Scotland this season.

Saturday we are away to the team who have given us our biggest hiding of the season so far! Which team from Musselburgh is going to turn up??

Back in September, Preston Athletic U20 came to Olivebank to meet Musselburgh Athletic U20 in the first round of the League Cup. The visitors won that tie 4-1. On Friday the two teams met again, this time in the league. As the Pennypitt was waterlogged, match was moved to Middleshot Square. Six of Burgh’s line up, in that cup tie are either no longer in the squad or out through injury: Blair Orr, Aaron Matheson, Shaun Taylor, Deej Nichol, Cami Laidlaw and Lewis Latimer.

Please note: only a couple of known Preston names, so most will be dealt with by their squad numbers.

Match kicked off at 8:00pm. With two minutes played, the home side no.14 hit a shot from 25 yards, which went past the post. On 15 minutes, Preston nearly took the lead. No.15 hit the ball from outside the Burgh box. Ross McRae had to get low, to turn ball out for a corner; which did not yield a goal.

From goal kick, it was Burgh’s time to attack. Ball went out of play. Gary Ewing took the throw in with ball going into the box, before being cleared by the Preston defence. From 20 yards; this time Gary Ewing tried to chip ball over keeper, with shot coming off bar and out for a corner, which came to nothing.

From the Preston goal kick, ball went out for a throw-in on the right wing. Ball came the McCole. Slack defending allowed McCole to run into the box and Ross McRae had no chance with the shot. After 17 minutes, Preston took a 1-0 lead.

On 17 minutes, the Burgh keeper, Ross McRae made three saves in quick succession and after the second, had to react quickly. McRae dropped the ball which Preston’s no.10 attempted to run-by the keeper. Ross McRae made amends though and got the ball back, then played it up field. A few passes later, the ball landed in the Preston box, where Ciaran Young attempted a shot. The ball came off a defender’s hand/arm and the referee blew for a penalty. Ciaran Young made no mistake and match was level at 1-1 after 18 minutes.

Another Burgh opportunity came in 25 minutes. Kyle McFadden played a good pass to Khasim Mdalasini. The first shot is blocked by a defender and back to Khasim, who then attempted to chip the goal keeper, but it was not high enough. Connor Fitzpatrick was none too happy as he stood unmarked in the 6-yard line.

On 30 minutes, following a foul on Ethan Wynne, Ciaran Young’s free kick from 30 yards is saved, second time around by the Preston keeper.  That was followed by the Preston no.10, who had a great chance in the Burgh box, but sliced his shot way wide of post. With three minutes to go, Ethan Wynne was held back by Preston no.16, who was booked for his efforts. Ciaran Young’s free kick soared over the bar.

Half time: Preston Athletic U20s 1-1 Musselburgh Athletic U20s

First 15 minutes of second half saw efforts from both sides, but no goals. Then, in a five minute period, the Preston captain, no.6 and Devan Craighead were both booked, and then no.6 received his second yellow; so a red card and Preston were down to 10 men.

Burgh went ahead on 74 minutes. Kyle McFadden passed to Khasim Mdalasini, who went by a defender and his shot went cross-goal and into the far side net. On 77 minutes, Euan Greig took a heavy fall from a challenge. No treatment was required, but play was stopped until Euan Greig was back on his feet.

The equaliser should have come on 79 minutes. From a Preston corner, ball came into the centre of box. The centre forward’s header went wide of post. A few subs in the second half saw Connor Fitzpatrick, Ethan Wynne and Kyle McFadden off, replaced by Dean Burgess, Josh Whitson and Ewan Graham.

On 86 minutes, from a pass by Ewan Graham, Khasim Mdalasini hit a bullet shot which the Preston keeper parried out for a corner. The cross, by Ciaran Young came into the box and an incoming Keiron Lugton connected with a powerful header, straight into the net. A few minutes of injury time was played, before the referee blew his final whistle.

Full time: Preston Athletic U20s 1-3 Musselburgh Athletic U20s.

A contrast between both games, with Musselburgh deservedly winning this league match. Best player for Musselburgh; my opinion, was Ethan Wynne. Apart from a couple of wayward passes, Kyle McFadden also had a terrific match. Best for Preston, was their no.10.

For anyone just wishing to know how goals were scored, yesterday, you do not have to scroll through my story (below); but rather; you are spoilt for choice. On 3 twitter accounts, you can see 18 goals at 3 different angles; from left and right touchlines and behind one of the goals. Nothing as spectacular as Penicuik’s excellent coverage, but you still get a ‘view’ of what spectators saw at different parts of the ground.

This was the second time that Jeanfield had met Musselburgh in the league this season. Late October saw the Perth side travel south; then return home following a resounding 6-3 win! Both teams came into Saturday's match having won last weekend; Jeanfield beat Linlithgow and Musselburgh won at home against Dundonald.

The trip to Perth was Burgh’s furthest away league fixture of this campaign. There was one change to last week’s starting line up. A fit again Bob Wilson returned to a centre half berth; a straight swap for Brian Martin.

A great start to the match saw Musselburgh take an early 2-0 lead. Jeanfield were on the attack, when Jordon Orru won possession and passed to Jackie Myles. The ball was launched up the left wing for Nathan Evans to chase. Near to the by-line, ball was crossed into the 6-yard box where Darren Downie slotted the ball into the net, for his 16th goal of the season. After eight minutes, Musselburgh led 1-0.

Musselburgh again dispossessed Jeanfield of the ball for their second goal. From a throw in, Jackie Myles won the ball and played a one-two with Mathu King. Then Jackie Myles hit an audacious lob from 30 yards, which saw the keeper rooted to the spot. Unluckily for the Burgh midfielder, the ball came down off the bar, but Darren Downie pounced and scored his second goal of the match. Burgh were 2-0 up in only 11 minutes and looked on course to avenge their biggest loss of the season.

With 20 minutes played, the first yellow card of match was shown to Jeanfield’s Simpson, which followed a challenge on Declan O’Kane. A minute later, Jeanfield supporters thought their team were back in the match. The home side’s playmaker, Simpson, moved up the centre of the pitch, then hit a curling 25 yard shot, which just went over the corner of the goal post. On 24 minutes, Simpson was again involved when he passed ball to Fergus. The left winger let fly, with the home support again raising their voices in expectation. However, a fine save by Michael Robinson kept the score at 0-2.

Second booking of the match again involved Declan O’Kane. This time, Fergus, who had to get treatment after the tackle, received a yellow as he got to his feet. On 40 minutes, Jeanfield right back Reid was booked for a challenge on Jordan Orru. The Musselburgh left back was involved again a couple of minutes later, as the referee blew for a penalty, as McLeish fell to the ground. Up stepped Connor McLaren to score from the spot and Jeanfield reduced the deficit.

Half time: Jeanfield Swifts 1-2 Musselburgh Athletic.

On 51 minutes, Scott Smith should have equalised, but he shot straight at Michael Robinson. Then, with 58 minutes played, Nathan Evans was booked for a foul on Whitehead. Musselburgh'sub first substitution came on the hour. Mathu King was replaced by Bradley Whyte. With 65 minutes gone, Burgh had two chances for a 3-1 lead and with that, the match could have been over! Following a great pass from Michael Moffat, Darren Downie was on for a hat-trick, but instead the ball came off the bar. From the rebound, Nathan Evans had an easy chance from the six yard line, however, the ball was cleared off the line by Reid. Just after this Michael Moffat received his first yellow card.

With 72 minutes played, Jack Gillan came on for Conor Thomson. On 75 minutes, Michael Moffat received his second yellow card, walking off the pitch before the referee brought out his yellow. This was harsh, as it appeared, Michael Moffat slipped, when chasing the ball and brought a Jeanfield player down (accidentally) in the same action.

Musselburgh reacted to the sending off by bringing on newly signed defender Ross Larner in place of Darren Downie.

The final 10 minutes saw three goals scored. On 80 minutes, Declan O’Kane and Jordon Urro were tackled by Regan McLaren. The Jeanfield player, then passed ball to Scott Smith, whose shot was parried by Michael Robinson.  Regan McLaren continued his move forward and regained the ball from Jono McManus and then played into Chris McLeish. The centre forward hit the ball between Bob Wilson’s legs and into the net. Match all square at 2-2.

Two minutes later, Jeanfield had a free kick, with Jono McManus bringing down McLeish just outside the right of the Burgh goal area. As the cross came in, left back, Kennedy, headed the ball, which came off the post. There was a bit of pinball football before Whitehead’s shot hit the net and Jeanfield took the lead 3-2.

Into injury time and again up the Jeanfield right wing, ball was played to Connor Smith. His cross passed both Burgh posts. Scott Smith got to the ball and played it back into the six yard box. From there McLaren made it 4-2. With that, Musselburgh had spurned a great chance of moving out of the bottom three.

Cheers CJ. Very disappointing result considering the superb start! I recollect Musselburgh losing very late goals this season against at least Bo'ness, Dunbar and now JS. Here's hoping 2020 sees a more resolute rearguard in the latter stages of games. Before that though, the "6 pointer" versus Dunbar. Should be a great game with a decent crowd. #montheburgh

When we went 2-0 up I thought there was only going to be one winner,  particularly as in next 30 minutes we matched Jeanfield. What is also disappointing is that when Dunbar got a man sent off, we were in the lead. Two goals in last seven minutes for the home side and we lost match. Similar with Bo'ness.  Up in that match, they went down to 10 men; we go down to a later winner.

On Saturday we go down to 10 men and winning 2-1. But three goals in last 10 minutes + injury time and another defeat. We need to be able to manage matches where sending offs seem only to effect us!

There doesn't need to be a lot of changes. Our home record is up amongst best in our league. Our away is worst but first 5 away losses, I think, were only by 1 goal!

You are correct that Dunbar is a huge match for us. Win and we go above them and maybe 1 or 2 other teams. Lose and we remain routed in bottom 3.

Really looking forward to visiting Musselburgh on the 28th.  Been very fortunate with the amount of derbies we have experienced the last couple of years. Adds a bit of spice to the games.

Big game for both teams. A ground that hasn't been too favourable to Dunbar in recent times. Fingers crossed we can produce a good performance to change that.

Big game indeed! Dunbar have won the last two matches against Musselburgh, albeit that both were home wins.

First Burgh match of 2019 - 5 January; coincidentally was Dunbar 3-1 Musselburgh. The team from Olivebank must ensure it wins this last match of 2019!

I notice that planning permission has been granted for your floodlights, will you be aiming to get them installed by February? https://pa.eastlothian.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=PY4FUEGNHGZ00

My understanding is that the floodlights will not be installed in this timeline, but rather later on in the year.

Ok, makes sense I suppose as you have another route to play in the Scottish Cup next season.

Don't quote me, but I do not think gaining entry to the Scottish Cup, via next month's Play off was the main reason for this - although I wish I thought of that!!

Common knowledge that East Lothian Council provided funding to Haddington, Tranent and Musselburgh; in excess of 50% of total costs of floodlights.

I do not know the position of Tranent, but we are nowhere near (no holes dug out!!)the stage of Haddington, who this week confirmed that work on the floodlights had commenced.

There is still fund raising activities going on.  Outwith the floodlights position, there are other aspects of ground improvements currently being worked on at Olivebank, to ensure Musselburgh are best prepared when the club's licence application is submitted.

Not sure if there is only one occasion per season, where applications can be submitted, but I think the club would aim for the one after February.
