Well attended AGM last niight. All four office bearers were confident of what lies ahead for Musselburgh with the caveat that there is still a lot of hard work to do to as the club moves forward! 

So while the committee continue to do their best off the field, focus will soon be back on the players and coaching staff.

It will be a tough, but, hopefully an enjoyable 2019-20. MTB

I agree with your thoughts about Killingworth. Great way to start the friendlies off! Very tight match in first half, with Musselburgh powering home in the 2nd, for a 3-0 win!

Geordie has got the guys playing attractive football, and good to see the new signings and trial it’s all playing a big part with the win!

Third pre-season match coming up today.

Last Saturday Burgh beat Killingworth 3-0 at Olivebank. This was followed up with a 4-4 draw at home to Spartans.

Today, the team continue to prepare for 2019-20, with a trip to play North Shields. The Newcastle team play in a league, equivalent of our Lowland league, so it promises to be another tough match-up.

Musselburgh's 4th pre-season match is tomorrow night, with a short journey to Pennypit Park to play Preston Athletic. Kick-off, according to twitter; is 7:30pm

The teams last met at the same venue on 28 July 2018.  Musselburgh beat the home side 3-0 in the Qualifying League - Round 1; the first competitive match, for Burgh, in the new East of Scotland Set up.

Three matches played so far (2 wins; 1 draw) has resulted in a total of 16 goals being scored with Burgh getting 10 of them!

First league match of the East of Scotland Premier league campaign saw Musselburgh travel to play Dunbar United. Despite a lot of rain in the morning and a number of match call-offs, the pitch looked in perfect condition.

With manager, Kevin McDonald away on holiday, Scott McNaughton took charge of his first Burgh match in his new role of Assistant manager. For Burgh, seven members of last year’s squad were in the starting line up, along with the returning, Declan O’Kane and newcomers, Paul Grant (goals), Tom Clare (centre half) and Darren Downie) forward.

Dunbar kicked off the match at 2.30pm, with the first attempt on goal, eight minutes later. Michael Moffat closed in on the ball as he entered the Dunbar penalty box, but he could not connect cleanly and Dunbar had a goal kick.

A minute later, Burgh were again on the attack, but the ball broke free and a quick counter attack saw Dunbar’s Ballantyne hit a good shot, which Paul Grant tipped over the bar. First booking of the match went against Tom Clare for a tackle deep in his own half. Cropley took the kick, which was headed out of the Burgh box. Ballantyne had his second chance in as many minutes, with a cracking shot. The ball went past an outstretched Paul Grant and into the corner of the net. After 12 minutes; Dunbar 1 - 0 Musselburgh.

From the kick-off, Dunbar were quickly on the ball again, with Paul Grant having to push another ball over the bar, this time from Fraser McLaren. One corner led to another. Cropley hit the ball over again and Ingram’s header went just wide of the post.

So from an initial quick start for the away side, Dunbar now seemed in control of the match. In 16 minutes, Burgh were on the attack with Mathu King chasing the ball into the goal area. However, the Dunbar keeper, McCathie had other ideas as he booted the ball out of the park.

For the third time in 11 minutes, Paul Grant had to tip the ball over the bar, this time, from a free-kick attempt by Ballantyne. On 25 minutes, Musselburgh came close to an equaliser. Liam Reid passed ball to Michael Moffat, who played a one-two with Conor Thomson. At the edge of the box, Michael’s cross-field pass found Liam Gregory. His shot was well saved by McCathie.

On 31 minutes, play was stopped, with Fraser McLaren booked for a foul. Liam Reid required treatment before he was able to continue playing. From the free kick, the ball was played upfield and out for a Burgh corner. From this, McCathie put ball out for a corner at the other side of the pitch. Conor Thomson’s second corner was shorter. Declan O’Kane back headed the ball and into the net. Against the run of play for large parts of the match, Burgh were back to 1-1; a score which remained till half time.

A minute into the 2nd half and a mistake by the linesman nearly resulted in Burgh going behind again. Michael Moffat had the ball on the right hand touchline when the linesman flagged for a throw in. This was quickly taken and McLaren was one-on-one with Paul Grant. The shot went across the goal area, just narrowly going past the post.

On 51 minutes, Cropley was the first player to be subbed, with McCraw coming on for Dunbar. A minute later, Paul Grant kicked the ball upfield to Michael Moffat, who was on the right wing. The cross into the box was controlled superbly by Conor Thomson, whose low drive hit the net and Burgh were 2-1 up. A minute later, Declan O’Kane had a chance to make it 3-1, but his shot went wide.

Match was an hour gone and Michael Moffat looked as if he was suffering from cramp in both legs. Burgh made a sub with Nathan Evans coming on for Darren Downie. in the space of a couple of minutes, both Michael Moffat and Gary Cherrie received yellow cards for fouling,

On 67 minutes, a long kick by Paul Grant was chased by Mathu King. He passed ball wide to Liam Gregory, who put a great cross into the Dunbar box. Declan O’Kane shot, but ball went sideways. Nathan Evans reacted quickest, but ball went over bar.

Dunbar’s second sub, in 68 minutes, saw ex-Burgh player Michael Hunter come on, with Fraser Neave coming off. A couple of minutes later, the ball was with Tom Clare. His pass back was too soft, and Ballantyne pounced on the ball. His shot / cross was saved by Paul Grant.

Jack Gillan came on, in 73 minutes, for a tiring Michael Moffat. That was followed by Liam Pedan booked for a foul and for back healing the ball into Jack Gillan’s face, after the ref had blown his whistle.

On 76 there were shouts from the Dunbar supporters for a penalty. The referee did not see it that way and it did not seem as if any Dunbar players did either. As the ball was played out of danger, Nathan Evans looked to have won the ball clearly. Again the referee saw this differently, booking Nathan Evans. Musselburgh fans were none to pleased, with Dunbar shouting/laughing that the referee did not know what he was doing.

With seven minutes remaining, Liam Peden received his second yellow, after a tackle on Mathu King. As the Dunbar player ran off the park, all looked well for Musselburgh, who were still leading 2-1.

Or maybe not...as a minute later, Dunbar played ball up the left wing. Jack Gillan looked to clear the ball away, but McCraw had other ideas. He got to the ball, then played a chip from the edge of the 18 yard box. The ball hit the back of the net for the goal of the match. Six minutes to go and score was level at 2-2.

Into final three minutes and Dunbar were on the attack. As ball came into the box, Paul Grant controlled the ball and played it out to Bradley Whyte. He hit a loose ball inside, which was intercepted by Ballantyne. He ran up to the edge of the goal line and from a tight angle, fired the ball past Paul Grant and it was 3-2 to Dunbar.

Two late subs saw Ballantyne go off for Dunbar; replaced by Tait. Then Brian Martin came on for Liam Gregory.

Into injury time and Burgh pressed for the equaliser. From the left wing, ball was played into the Dunbar box. Brian Martin controlled the ball and squared it to Mathu King. His touch was just too high with the ball coming off the bar and out for a by-kick.

Final whistle went and it was Dunbar who picked up the win and three points. The home side will wonder how they did not go in at half time in the lead. But they did win and probably were the better team. Best player for Dunbar was the 2-goal scorer Ballantyne.

For Musselburgh, it was a what if scenario. Lucky to go in at half time one-each; then wondering how they managed to loose a 2-1 lead with six minutes remaining and with Dunbar down to 10 men. I do not know who won the Burgh supporters player of the match, but I thought Gary Cherrie was Musselburgh’s best player. Apart from a loose first pass, Liam Reid played well for the rest of the match and ran Gary close.

One or two Burgh players were at fault with poor passing, and this caused two of the goals. Hopefully, the management team and players can rectify this defeat with a win on Tuesday night (30 July) when Newtongrange are visitors to Olivebank.

The supporters club man of match was awarded to Declan O’Kane, in his first competitive match, since his return to the club from Berwick.

Next match is on Tuesday night when Newtongrange are the visitors to Olivebank. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

As both teams lost on Saturday, neither will want to fall six points behind the league leaders, so early in the season.

On Tuesday night it was Musselburgh’s second league match of the season. Newtongrange were the visitors to Olivebank. Both teams lost on Saturday, so were hoping that lightening did not strike twice in the same week!

The home side made four changes from Saturday’s starting line up. Out went Bradley Whyte, Tom Clare, Liam Gregory and Darren Downie. In came, Jack Gillan, trialist - Brian Martin, Jackie Myles - returning from suspension and Nathan Evans.

For Newtongrange, they had four ex-Burgh players in their starting line up. Kieron Renton, Eck Christie, Adam Nelson and Stevie Thomson.

Nitten kicked off the match at 7.31pm. A minute later Musselburgh were on the attack. Mathu King had the ball on left side of the pitch and his shot brought out a good save from Renton. However, the linesman had raised her flag for offside.

Three minutes gone and Newtongrange were awarded a free kick following an infringement by Declan O’Kane. Adam Nelson took the kick. Mathu King headed the ball clear, only then to collide with the post. Play was stopped momentarily, with Mathu King up and able to resume play. Two minutes later and match was stopped again. This time, Michael Moffat, either got some dirt/grit in his eye or was hurt from a challenge as a Newtongrange player went past on the wing. Following a bit of treatment there; no lasting effect and the match continued.

Musselburgh nearly went one nil up in eight minutes. Following a bad pass back, Mathu King beat Renton to the ball, but the shot came back off the post and then cleared for a corner. Next play saw Newtongrange in attack. Centre forward, Paterson, easily went by Liam Reid and into the box. His cross eas met by Brian Martin, whi put behind for a corner.

A number of chances fell to both sides in the next 15 minutes, but neither keeper was stretched at that point. An early substitution came and it was a blow to Musselburgh. Brian Martin had to come off the park after pulling his hamstring. On 25 minutes Ross Larner came on, on and took up his position in central defence.

Another forward forage by Paterson who again went by Liam Reid and Michael Moffat. His shot was turned away for a corner by Paul Grant. As the ball came over, Jack Murray hammered a shot, which hit the side of the post and out for a by-kick. On the half hour; how Newtongrange did not go into the lead was a major talking point. Musselburgh were involved in some calamitous defending and the ball fell to Newtongrange's Porteous. With a gaping hole in front of him, some how, Porteous missed from three yards, with the ball blasted over the bar!!

Into the final minute of the half, ball was played up the right wing and crossed into the Musselburgh box. Hume, rose to head the ball, but instead of targeting the goals, the ball went back the way it came and a number of groan went around from the Nitten supporters.

Half time 0-0.

Burgh kicked off the second half, but quickly lost possession. Nitten went on the attack. Paul Grant came rushing out to get the ball, just as Gary Cherrie ran back towards the goal - the result of which, Paul Grant was nearly taken out by his own team player.

On 47 minutes. Newtongrange had a free kick just outside the Burgh box. As Thomson floated the ball towards goal, Liam Reid won the challenge, which allowed Paul Grant time to collect the ball. A minute after, Michael Moffat went down following a challenge with Porteous. Referee waived play on and Porteous curled the ball into the the bottom corner. After 48 minutes it was 1-0 to Newtongrange.

Three minutes later and Nitten were again on the attack, involving Adam Nelson and his brother Grant. The latter hit a cross into the box and Porteous was unlucky not to make it two nil.

Play was stopped again in 56 minutes. The ball was punted into the Newtongrange box and Renton rose high to try and win the ball. However, he landed heavily and needed treatment before continuing.

On the hour, Newtongrange were awarded a free kick. Kieron Renton collected the ball in his area but Nathan Evans ran into Renton, who was none to pleased. Five minutes later and Nathan Evans received a yellow card following a challenge on Porteous. Seemed a bit of petulance creeping into his play.

Musselburgh’s second substitution came in 67 minutes with Darren Downie on for Gary Cherrie. Just after 70 minutes and Newtongrange were 2-0 up. Ball was near the Burgh goal area. Ross Larner hit a poor pass out of defence; straight to Stevie Thomson. He hit a bullet shot right into the back of the net from a good 25 yards - cracking goal.

Porteous was subbed on 72 minutes with Scott replacing him on the Newtongrange left wing. Two minutes later and the ball was in acres of space. Grant Nelson homed in on goals but Paul Grant made a good save to keep Burgh in the match.

With 75 minutes played, Jack Gillan received a yellow card as he held onto Thomson’s shirt. From the free kick, Thomson squared the ball to O’Hara and his shot just went past the Burgh post. Thirteen minutes remained, when Daniel McBay came on for Jack Gillan.

Into the last 10 minutes and the deficit was reduced to 2-1. Burgh were on the attack and the ball fell to Darren Downie just inside the box and he scored. Hume received a yellow, on 84 minutes following a challenge. At that point, Bracks came on for Lauder for the away side.

It was all over for Musselburgh come 87 minutes. Great run up the left wing by Scott, who went past Liam Reid and Michael Moffat. Paterson then took over on the left hand side of the goal area and hit a low drive past Paul Grant and Newtongrange were 3-1 up.

In final Daniel McBay rose to head the ball towards goal, but Kieron dived to smother the ball and that was the last piece of action.

Two defeats in a row is not what the players and fans of Musselburgh wanted - or expected.

An early chance to put this right comes on Saturday. Again, Musselburgh are at home; this time to Sauchie. To be truthful, I would be pressed to pick a player of the match.

But, the Musselburgh supporters club man of the match award went to Michael Moffat.

For the second match in a row, Musselburgh were at home for a league match. Saturday’s opponents were Sauchie, who came into league match three, having drawn 2-2 against Hill of Beath, then losing 4-1, in midweek, away to Linlithgow.  

With losing their first two league matches, the Musselburgh management and players would be depending on a victory this time around. Four changes to the midweek starting line-up saw the return of Bradley Whyte, Tom Clare, John McManus and Darren Downie. Out went the injured trialist, Brian Martin as well as Liam Reid, Jack Gillan and Gary Cherry.

The match was only a couple of minutes played when the first goal was scored. Conor Thomson played a cross into the box. This was met by an incoming Jonno McManus and his header went into the far corner of the net. Musselburgh 1 – 0 Musselburgh.

On 12 minutes, Michael Moffat played the ball to Darren Downie on the half way line. Darren Downie returned the ball up the wing and into the box. Michael Moffat’s shot was just wide of the far away post and even though Mathu King tried to chase the ball down; he was not able to reach it.

With 19 minutes played Michael Moffat was penalised for a foul on a Sauchie player. Free kick by McTaggart was headed in the Musselburgh box by the centre forward, Small. He should at least have hit the target but the ball went wide of the post. A few minutes later and another crunching tackle by Michael Moffat raised an angry response by some Sauchie supporters. However, the referee waived play on and the move finished with a shot by Jackie Myles, which went high over the bar. At that point, the referee allowed the physio (courtesy of Musselburgh) to come on and treat the injured McTaggart.

Sauchie had a tentative shot on goal. Free kick into the box, was headed backwords by Cross, but again the ball went out for a by-kick.

Musselburgh were on the attack up the right wing, when there appeared to be a handball by a Sauchie player. It looked as if Musselburgh had settled for a free kick on the edge of the box, but the referee had other ideas, as he pointed to the spot. A yellow card was shown to the defender, before Mathu King stepped up and hit the spot kick into the corner of the goals for a 2-0 lead to Musselburgh after 34 minutes.

In a three-minute spell, the Sauchie keeper had two great saves both from Darren Downie; certainly keeping the away side in the match. Into the final minute of the first half and Tom Clare was given a yellow card for shirt pulling.

It looked as if Sauchie thought that the match was slipping away from them as they made two substitutions for the start of the second half. Sharp and Finlayson came on for McTaggart and Faulds.

With 50 minutes played, Sauchie scored. Ball played up the left wing and taken on by McCauchie. From the edge of the box, his shot flew past Paul Grant and the deficit was reduced to 2-1. On 53 minutes Paul Grant pulled off a good diving save from Cross. From being so dominant in the first half, Sauchie were very much back in the match.

Back came Musselburgh on the attack. The ball was chipped into the Sauchie box, but away from the goals. Mathu King ran to the get the ball at the six of the box and as he turned let rip a shot, which was heading for the top corner of the net. However, the keeper was not having any of that and made another great save turning the ball away for a corner.

The Sauchie no.7, McCauchie was having a fine match and twice in two minutes, ran past Tom Clare as if he was stationary. With the second move, McCauchie’s shot just went out for a goal kick.

With 65 minutes played, the match was getting a bi niggly with a few stupid tackles being put in by both sides. Into the final 20 minutes and Bradley Whyte put a great ball into the box, towards Mathu King. However, ball was intercepted and out for a corner. Ball came to Nathan Evans. His shot took a slight defection; the ball came off the far side post and back into play and then cleared.

On 71 minutes, Gary Cherrie came on, to replace Jackie Myles. At same time, for Sauchie, Dolan came on for Dawson. A minute later, Nathan Evans was in the clear. As he was about to strike, the referee raised his flag for offside, which produced jeers form the home crowd. A few minutes later and another good cross came in from the by-line by Bradley Whyte. However, there were no takers!

Into the final nine minutes. What then followed was an amazing 20 seconds of football. Nathan Evans crossed the ball into the box, which Mathu King failed to connect with and ball was cleared by a defender just as Darren Downie was about to hit his shot. Ball came to Declan O’Kane, who was standing outside the box. Declan O’Kane returned a cross/shot back into the box, which came off the bar. Nathan Evans then hit the rebound, which produced a fantastic save by Young. The keeper seemed to stretch and turn his body at the same time and turn the ball away for a corner.

With six minutes remaining, Daniel McBay came on for Darren Downie. It was not long before Daniel McBay was in action, heading the ball towards Bradley Whyte. Nathan Evans ran on to meet Bradley Whyte’s pass. As the ball was played into the box, Mathu King’s shot went away from target.

Into the last minute and the final substitution of the match saw Jack Gillan on for Mathu King. A couple minutes of injury time later and the match ended.

Full time was Musselburgh 2 – 1 Musselburgh.

Particularly with possession that Musselburgh had in the first half, the match should have been done and dusted after 45 minutes. The Sauchie Keeper, Young, also merited a great deal of praise for an outstanding performance.

My man of the match undoubtedly would have gone to Bradley Whyte. However, we need to see the result of the Supporters club official man of the match award!

Saturday saw the fourth match of 2019-20 for Musselburgh. The league campaign took a back seat, with the first cup tie of the season. First round draw of the Alex Jack Cup pitched Musselburgh away to Peebles Rovers. However, their ground was unavailable this weekend. Both  teams agreed that the match take place at Olivebank.

Last season Peebles lost 6-1 at Olivebank. The reverse fixture was a much tighter affair, with Liam Reid heading the winner, in a 3-2 victory.

One change to last week's starting line up. An injured Michael Moffat watched from the sidelines. Daniel McBay got his first start, playing in midfield. Conor Thomson moved to right back position.

On a warm, sunny afternoon, Peebles kicked off the match at 14:31. Four minutes later Nathan Evans had the ball on the left side of pitch. The pass to Mathu King was a bit too heavy. Mathu King’s touch was to back heel it and Darren Downie hit a curling shot into the net. Musselburgh lead 1-0.

Second goal came in eight minutes. From the right hand side of his own half, Declan O’Kane hit a brilliant 30 yard cross field pass in front of Nathan Evans. With the ball collected a yard from the by-line, Nathan Evans turned and passed towards Darren Downie, who moved towards goals and in turn his second goal of the match.

Match was fast flowing and a move from Peebles saw the centre forward (No Peebles Players Names Available), in a tussle with Jonno McManus, in the Burgh box. The no.9 fell to the ground and claimed a penalty. Referee played on and ball was cleared. It took the tall forward a couple of minutes to pick himself up and be able to continue with the match.

On 13 minutes, Peebles number 10 had a shot on goal. He tried to chip ball over Paul Grant, but only succeeded in blasting ball onto the pavilion roof.

Ten minutes later, Burgh had another chance to score. Darren Downie was looking for his hat-trick. However, there were two defenders in front and as Darren Downie shot, the ball was blocked and cleared from the Peebles 6-yard box. In the next play, Daniel McBay played the ball up the left wing. Nathan Evans hit a delightful cross into the box. Mathu King’s header came off the post and over the line to increase the home side’s lead to 3-0. 

Peebles got a corner in 28 minutes. Ball came to no.6, who played it to the right back. His shot produced a good save from Paul Grant who dived to put out ball for another corner. On 32 minutes, Bradley Whyte hit a pass towards Mathu King. A mix up in the Peebles defence saw the centre half leave the ball, thinking his keeper would collect. However, Mathu King stuck out his leg and guided the ball past the outcoming keeper and into the net. Four - nil to the home side and the scoring was not finished for the first half.

On 36 minutes, Declan O’Kane played a one two with Darren Downie. As the ball came back, Declan O’Kane hit a near pass into the box and Nathan Evans stroked the ball into the net to lead 5-0.

For the second half kick-off, Musselburgh brought on their three substitutes; Gary Cherrie, Jack Gillan and Liam Reid. Off went Darren Downie, Jonno McManus and Mathu King. First forward move by Musselburgh resulted in a corner. Conor Thomson played the ball out to the 18 yard box. Declan O’Kane’s volley produced a good save by the Peebles keeper.

Most of play in the first 20 minutes went Musselburgh’s way but no further scoring. On 65 minutes, Musselburgh had four corners in quick succession. From the 2nd, Peebles nearly scored an own goal; for the 3rd, the keeper brought off a good save from a Jackie Myles shot and finally, Jackie Myles next shot went high and out of the ground.

The by-kick did not go out the Peebles half. On the 2nd attack, the ball was played down the Musselburgh left wing. From the goal line, Daniel McBay played ball out and Nathan Evans crossed ball was headed into the goals by Conor Thomson. Musselburgh now led 6-0.

On 69 minutes,Nathan Evans had the ball up the centre of the pitch. Connor Thomson; Conor Thomson on the right wing, with Daniel McBay just to the left of Nathan Evans and with a clear route to goal. Ball was played to Conor Thomson, whose shot from a tight angle produced another good save by the Peebles keeper. An easier pass to Daniel McBay would surely resulted in goal number 7!

A bizarre happening on 75 minutes. A Peebles player was down injured in his own box. When ball went out of play, the referee signalled for the player to receive treatment. Stephen Murphy, the Musselburgh physio picked up his bag, but put it down as he saw someone from the Peebles bench go onto the pitch. However, instead of heading towards the injured player, the guy gave out bottles of water to a couple of players, then spoke to one of them. So, the injured player had to fend for himself. Comical!!

No further scoring and match ended Musselburgh 6-0 Peebles.

Most of second half was played in the Peebles half, with only one goal scored. There could and should have been more goals but some of the 2nd half play was not as good as it should have been.

Musselburgh had numerous corners, but only one came into the penalty area. The rest were either short passes or to the edge of the box. This did not seem to be a tactic agreed by the management, or else only a couple of players knew!

Also some of the passing was a bit wanting, or the players were being a bit greedy by not passing when that appeared the easiest option.

However, a good result, with no goals conceded. Daniel McBay was awarded the supporters club man of the match. Well done Dan, and another player who must have taken the eye of the management team for a starting position in the team.

One month ago Musselburgh drew 3-3 with Preston Athletic, coming from behind to level the match.

Tomorrow we return to the Pennypit for the Football Nations qualifying cup. Burgh will be hoping to win their 3rd match in a row, having lost the first two fixtures of the season.

First away fixture since 27 July so good for committee members to have a break from match day duties and hopefully enjoy the match.
