Forfarshire Cup

Does this cup still exist?

Just with Jeanfield Swifts becoming a member of the SFA you'd have an 8 team competition now.

It's pretty much dead. They still do the odd draw and pretend a pre season friendly is a cup fixture but a final hasn't been contested in about 5 years and even then god knows what seasons tournament it was.

St Johnstone were very late entrants in this, think it was 1980's or 1990s before they entered for first time.

Did they not replace United when they left?

There is history of Perthshire teams though as Coupar Angus were part of the original Forfarshire FA.

Although given that this is a forum given to the utmost pedantry (and quite right too) Coupar Angus's ground was in Forfarshire when the association was founded in 1883 (although the town centre has always been in Perthshire) and remained  so until Perthshire got the whole town in 1891.

And it’s daft wee things like that which make this place so good! Every day is a school day :thumsup2

Certainly mid 80's when Saints joined.

Before that Saints played in the Dewars Shield which was for the winners of the Perthshire, Forfarshire, Aberdeenshire & Stirlingshire cups.

It's a wee bit sad that this has gone by the wayside. Dundee and Dundee United contested the final in 1987-88 at Dens in front of a crowd of just under 10,000. IIRC both Dundee clubs decided just to enter their reserves in the following years and don't really bother with it now.

Kinnoull would make 9.

Last completed edition was 2014-15 (Forfar won Final at Arbroath held-over to September 2015).

Last tie played was in R1 of 2015-16 edition (Brechin 0-5 Dundee Utd held-over to Saturday 9th July 2016).

Strictly speaking... St Johnstone and Aberdeen played-off with Perthshire and Aberdeenshire cup winners (in St Johnstone's case until the Perthshire Cup went amateur, IIRC).

the competition is as historic as the name of the "county".

Show more respect.

Yep. IIRC the draw for the 2015/16 edition was held pretty quickly after the delayed 2014/15 final but the Brechin vs United game was the only one played. Saints were drawn to face Arbroath (winners playing Montrose) but the tie was never played.

Our last outing was a 2-0 semi-final defeat to Forfar in January 2015. The game was given such prominence that it was played on the same night the first team were in Inverness.
