Cumbo
Does this cup still exist? Just with Jeanfield Swifts becoming a member of the SFA you'd have an 8 team competition now.
invergowrie arab
It's pretty much dead. They still do the odd draw and pretend a pre season friendly is a cup fixture but a final hasn't been contested in about 5 years and even then god knows what seasons tournament it was.
invergowrie arab
Did they not replace United when they left? There is history of Perthshire teams though as Coupar Angus were part of the original Forfarshire FA. Although given that this is a forum given to the utmost pedantry (and quite right too) Coupar Angus's ground was in Forfarshire when the association was founded in 1883 (although the town centre has always been in Perthshire) and remained so until Perthshire got the whole town in 1891. Certainly mid 80's when Saints joined. Before that Saints played in the Dewars Shield which was for the winners of the Perthshire, Forfarshire, Aberdeenshire & Stirlingshire cups.
Benjamin_Nevis
It's a wee bit sad that this has gone by the wayside. Dundee and Dundee United contested the final in 1987-88 at Dens in front of a crowd of just under 10,000. IIRC both Dundee clubs decided just to enter their reserves in the following years and don't really bother with it now.
Ivo den Bieman
the competition is as historic as the name of the "county".

Last completed edition was 2014-15 (Forfar won Final at Arbroath held-over to September 2015). Last tie played was in R1 of 2015-16 edition (Brechin 0-5 Dundee Utd held-over to Saturday 9th July 2016). 12 hours ago, Steve McQueen said: Certainly mid 80's when Saints joined. St Johnstone and Aberdeen played-off with Perthshire and Aberdeenshire cup winners (in St Johnstone's case until the Perthshire Cup went amateur, IIRC). 6 hours ago, Ivo den Bieman said: the competition is as historic as the name of the "county". Yep. IIRC the draw for the 2015/16 edition was held pretty quickly after the delayed 2014/15 final but the Brechin vs United game was the only one played. Saints were drawn to face Arbroath (winners playing Montrose) but the tie was never played. Our last outing was a 2-0 semi-final defeat to Forfar in January 2015. The game was given such prominence that it was played on the same night the first team were in Inverness. Loondave1
I'm sure by the late 70s early 80s you could win it and lose it again a few weeks later as the fixtures were so random and delayed.
MO7S
Please let it be dead. We've to play the ploughboys in the Betfred Cup, the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup and twice in the League all at Links Park this season plus two League games at Station Park. Surely no one wants to risk another cup match between the two.
Ray Patterson
Bump. Always liked the Forfarshire Cup. I remember going to the final ever game. I would prefer if we ditched the Irn Bru Cup and brought back/reinvigorated all the county cups. Similar to the set-up in Northern Ireland with the County shields. 2020-21 could be something like this: Round 1 Brechin Jeanfield Swifts Kinnoull Luncarty (assuming they join EoS at end of the season) Quarter Finals: Two Winners from Round 1 St Johnstone Dundee United Arbroath Dundee Forfar Athletic Montrose
Eednud
^^^ Bump The very first Final of the Forfarshire Cup was on this day, Saturday 22 December 1883 between Arbroath and Dundee Harp. On the way to the Final Arbroath beat Our Boys (Dundee) 4-1, West End (Dundee) 3-1, Strathmore (Dundee) 2-1. Dundee Harp beat Clydesdale (Dundee) 15-0, Broughty Ferry 22-0, Strathmore (Arbroath) 6-3. The Final was at Rollo’s Pier, home of Strathmore (Dundee). Attendance was 5,000 to see Arbroath lift the cup after a 2-1 victory. Only know this thanks to the Arbroath Archive although had to check www.sfha.org.uk to find out where Clydesdale were from. ETA: Rollo’s Pier was off Magdalen Yard Road. https://www.arbroatharchive.co.uk/matchdetails.php?id=802 Edited December 22, 2023 by Eednud

I know they have the plans in the University archives but I have never bothered to go down yet.

kristov
Rollo's Pier (locally called Rollo's Folly in the 18th century) was named after a nearby pier which never served any purpose (hence "folly"). The park was located on marshy ground now occupied by student accommodation and flats at the top of Roseangle- so just to the east of Invergowrie Arab's photo. The ground was quirky in that some stone arches similar to the Tay Bridge arches at Barnetts (I think long gone) served as changing facilities. There's an artist's rendering in the book "Our Boys and the Wise Men". Before being a football ground the land was used for outdoor dances and social events.
