Alex Jack Cup 2019-20

Recommended Posts

With no fewer than 16 clubs in the Scottish Cup, and Haddington banned, my reckoning is there are a reduced entry of 22 sides in this season's competition.

Certainly the stronger sides will be eyeing-up not only silverware but Scottish Cup qualifying slot.

Bo'ness, Crossgates, Dunbar, Musselburgh, Newtongrange, Sauchie, Tranent

Craigroyston, Dunipace, Heriot-Watt Uni, Kinnoull, Leith, Oakley, Ormiston, Peebles, St Andrews
Arniston, Dalkeith, Edinburgh Utd, Glenrothes, Inverkeithing, Tweedmouth

IS this the cup Camelon won last season?

They don't get to defend it?

So they get entry into this years Scottish Cup but are essentially barred from next Seasons competition unless they win the Scottish or get a licence? That's seems a tad unfair.

The Alex Jack Cup is played on the same weekends that the Scottish Cup is being played.

It's the cup for teams which aren't in the Scottish Cup. If you win it (and the South & East of Scotland Cup Winners' Shield) you qualify for the Scottish Cup. It's played on the same dates as the Scottish Cup. By definition if you win it you can't defend it!

Cleverly, that also means someone different qualifies every year, sharing the opportunity around.

Off topic but when I went onto the Bonnyrigg web site to read their announcement that they had been granted their Licence I noticed that they are down to play Glasgow University away on 14th September. Would that be a Scottish FA Cup tie or something-else?

First Round
Crossgates Primrose v Glenrothes
Dunbar United v Dunipace
Peebles Rovers v Musselburgh Athletic
Arniston Rangers v Kinnoull
Heriot-Watt University v Tranent
Bo'ness United v Newtongrange Star

Second Round
Edinburgh United v Crossgates/Glenrothes
Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts v Tweedmouth Rangers

Dalkeith Thistle v Oakley United
Peebles/Musselburgh v Bo'ness/Newtongrange
Ormiston v Sauchie
Heriot-Watt Uni/Tranent v St Andrews United
Dunbar/Dunipace v Craigroyston

Tie of R1 has to be Bo'ness v Newtongrange and the winner may face a tough tie at Musselburgh in R2.

Crossgates v Glenrothes provides a Fife derby. Possibility of Tranent v St Andrews.

On the flipside, opportunity for smaller clubs to reach QFs with Inverkeithing or Tweedmouth, 1 of Arniston/Kinnoull/Leith and Dalkeith or Oakley guaranteed places.

Second Round     Saturday 31st August 2019
Third Round          Saturday 21st September 2019
Semi-Finals           Saturday 19th October 2019

Arniston P-P Kinnoull
Crossgates 0-2 Glenrothes
Dunbar 3-0 Dunipace
Musselburgh 6-0 Peebles
Newtongrange 1-5 Bo'ness
Heriot-Watt Univ 2-3 Tranent

Result of the day must be Glenrothes for winning away to Premier opponent Crossgates. Already the Glens seem to be taking the step-up to senior football like a duck to water with some good early league results and now this cup win.

However credit also to Heriot-Watt... out of term-time they gave Tranent a scare, twice fighting back from a goal down, only conceding the winner with 10mins left.

R2 ties on Saturday 31st August:

Edinburgh Utd v Glenrothes
Inverkeithing v Tweedmouth
Dalkeith v Oakley
Musselburgh v Bo'ness
Ormiston v Sauchie
Tranent v St Andrews
Dunbar v Craigroyston

plus outstanding Arniston/Kinnoull v Leith.

No doubt that Musselburgh v Bo'ness will be tie-of-the-round but eyes will also be on Sauchie, Tranent and Dunbar - also considered contents for this Scottish Cup qualifying tournament.

Worth adding these were the results in the parallel Southern Alternate Alba Cup R1:

Nithsdale 8-0 Dumfries YMCA
Upper Annandale 2-3 Heston Rovers (aet, FT 2-2)

QF draw there (also August 31st):

Abbey Vale v Creetown
Mid Annandale v Lochar

(? - involves Nithsdale, Heston, Bonnyton, Lochmaben)

Guessing Crossgates had two suspended after their red cards last week, still a good result though. Will fancy themselves against Edinburgh United, and a decent chance of getting to the semis if they avoid the Bo'ness/Sauchie/Tranent/Dunbar tie winners in the QF.

Arniston 0-2 Kinnoull

Dalkeith 0-1 Oakley
Dunbar WO-Scr Craigroyston
Edinburgh Utd 2-1 Glenrothes
Inverkeithing 3-0 Tweedmouth
Musselburgh 3-1 Bo'ness
Ormiston 0-3 Sauchie
Tranent 2-1 St Andrews

Some surprise results today with Bo'ness crashing at Musselburgh and an improving Edinburgh Utd prevailing over Glenrothes.

Short of winning the EOS Premier Division come the spring Bo'ness will have to get licensed in order to feature in next season's Scottish Cup.

Musselburgh and Tranent must be favourites now - but Dunbar, Sauchie, and First Divisioners cannot be overlooked.

QF contestants:

Kinnoull / Leith Athletic
Dunbar United
Edinburgh United
Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts
Musselburgh Athletic
Oakley United
Sauchie
Tranent

Maybe because we have lost 4 out of 6 matches this season, you could say it was some surprise for Burgh to win today.

But, Burgh fans would have been confident. Our cup final at the end of last season, which Bo’ness won, was a very closely contested affair. Also our last match at Olivebank against Bo’ness, when both Junior clubs, resulted in a 1-0 win for Burgh!

Again hard fought that’s 3 wins in a row for young Edinburgh United side. See what the draw throws up next.
