The Brechin City Thread

It's really hard to see what Brechin City have been trying to achieve over the last few years. Dunning1874 above has posted a handy timeline from 2017 onwards and it makes for confusing reading - why was Dods not punted midway through the Championship campaign? Why was he allowed to start the new 2018/19 season when almost every supporter had lost faith in him? Why was he eventually sacked when he looked as though he was turning things around? Why was Barry Smith kept on after the relegation to League 2? Why was he binned after just five games? Why has the same thing happened to Mark Wilson when he's spent the last five months putting his team together?

The thinking is so fuzzy!

Dods was given a two year contract after we got promoted. They couldn't afford to sack him during that championship season.

You're absolutely right though why let them start the next season when they have so obviously failed. It is baffling to keep doing the same thing.

While sacking a failing manager too late is better than not sacking him at all, there really seems to be no strategic thinking at Brechin.

Dods gets a whole season in the Championship while taking only four points, then while sitting mid-table the following season gets bagged for two successive defeats having just gone six unbeaten before that. Clearly being punished for the previous season rather than his results in 18/19, so that being the case why give him the summer rather than letting a new manager build a squad and work with them to prepare for the season?

Smith takes over from Dods, makes things worse and gets relegated, but keeps his job and gets to build a team for the following season. He then gets sacked three league games into that season. Why give him the summer rather than a letting a new manager build the squad and work with them to prepare for the new season?

Wilson takes over from Smith, there's no great improvement and he finishes the season adrift in bottom place having taken just 14 points from the 22 games he was in charge for, but keeps his job and gets to a build a team for the following season. He then gets sacked two league games into that season. Why give him etc etc?

Quite the opposite  I think.  Given the shortened season , there is no time to hang about like we did in previous seasons . Mark knew that this season was the most important in the club's history and his bold plan for fast attacking football, although welcomed , was actually starting to look quite shambolic given the amount of goals we were shipping on a weekly basis. The likelihood of things changing quickly looked less likely and the same excuses were reeled out from Wilson  with no apparent sign of the problems being addressed.

Yes he signed some young lads with great potential and a bit of attacking flair but the balance of also keeping things tight was missing.

There are huge changes being made at the club at the moment behind the scenes . These changes will be for nothing if things aren't happening on the park.

Was the wrong appointment in the first place IMO however, that is done.... The team have looked totally disjointed and the shape all over the place in games. Fair enough having attacking flair, however, there is no clinical finishing and certainly no structure defending as a unit. The new manager will have a job on his hands and no doubt pressure from fans to succeed fast.

Philip McGuire has had successful stints at St Andrews and Carnoustie with promotion and league title (last season would have been theirs) worth a punt

Thomas Courts also very handy and doing well at Dundee United with plenty of contacts...... McCunnie and Gibby also other ones in contention i would have thought...... appointment will need to be quite sharp though

Good to see you  again when talk of a new manager is kicking about. ;)

Tam Courts would be an excellent appointment if it didn't clash with his role at United. Built an excellent Kelty side and has good contacts at both youth and LL/EOS Level.

Also a sub note, Allan and Ally Campbell (Son's of Ian), have done a fantastic job at Crossgates Primrose, bit of an ambitious jump but I wonder if the family connection would help.

Time not on our side for ambitious prospects unfortunately

All I would comment was that Albion Rovers quickly emptied John Brogan and got Kevin Harper in when they sank to the bottom of the League. Berwick stuck with their not universally popular manager to the end.

Albion Rovers are still in the Scottish League. Berwick are now Lowland League also rans.

What's Charlie King up to these days? Was he not managing in the juniors?
Was waiting on him being mentioned. Would love to see him back involved with the club in some way but don't think hes the right man for the managers job maybe a coach or assistant manager. Think we need some one with a proven record that is going to get us out of this mess. I really thought Mark was going to be the man that did it he certainly talked a good game
