South Region Challenge Cup 2019/20

Recommended Posts

This is going to end up being too little, too late from the Juniors again, just like with the league situation.

At any point over the last 8 years since the pyramid started, they could have guaranteed the future of the Junior Cup as the Premier non-league cup competition in Scotland, but they steadfastly refused to invite any senior clubs on board despite Junior clubs having been invited into the Scottish Cup for the last 15 years or so.

Instead they waited until all their bigger clubs moved across to senior football and then finally decided to try to open it up. But now the South Challenge Cup will take priority in terms of the fixture list and that will ultimately therefore end up being the primary competition.

It's a carbon copy of when, rather than just engaging with the Lowland League and agreeing to feed into it, probably absorbing the EoS and SoS in the process, they instead tried to do their own thing until it was far too late and ended up basically ceasing to exist in its former heartlands in the west and east.

Seven of this season's new EoS clubs retained their SJFA membership and entered the SJC along with 53 WoS ones. The senior vs junior blazer politics are not over yet.

Never realised but not surprised that the last men standing retained their SJFA membership.

The more I think about it it’s a dead duck.

Not sure there's much politics involved when 7 members out of 59 want to play in a cup nobody else is involved in.  On you go, but fit it in around the EoSFL schedule. Just like the Fife Cup participants have to do.

Suggesting that two cups be merged is not hanging onto one of them.  An all in Scottish Junior Challenge Cup or whatever would be the final step in burying the whole junior vs senior concept once and for all.

Including the word Junior in the title is hardly going to bury the whole junior vs senior concept.

Fortunately the Scottish Cup / Alex Jack Cup / Junior Cup situation where you can only play in one of them means it shouldn't have too much of an affect on the schedule.

That's what I thought would be the case but because there is overlap between SJC and Scottish Cup entrants (e.g. Auchinleck Talbot, BoD etc) fixture dates used initially for the SJC are not lining up neatly with the Alex Jack cup ones so it is not at all clear at this point how the 7 out of 59 are going to resolve fixture clashes with EoS related commitments. It's basically lunatic stuff that two out of six tier 6 feeders are still in a separate affiliated national assoiation and the SJC is being run in parallel with the SCC in a ma cup is bigger than your cup, ma cup can batter your cup sort of way, but it's Scottish football so...

Sums it up how it’s fallen being mentioned in the same context as the Fife Cup.

The SJC is going the same way as the county cups, think the Fife one is the only one still active and don’t even know if it will be played this year.

Glasgow City Cup & Southern Counties Cup are still about. Up north there's the North of Scotland & Aberdeenshire Cups.

The weekends after the SJC 1st round and before the 2nd round are reserved for cup dates in the EOS, so there's some room to manoeuvre. Though at the moment there's four fixture clashes on the 21st to be resolved. I'm assuming these league games will be moved to the following weekend, otherwise it also impacts on the opposition WOS and North clubs.

The SJC in parallel is not really the fault of the SCC or EOS, the onus has always been on the SJFA to allow non-members into their competition and it's only this season that this has been allowed (for tier 6), perhaps too little too late.
