Saturday 31st July 2021
Hill of Beath Hawthorn v Dunipace

After a wretched start to season HofB will hope playing a tie from 2yrs ago can help recapture their form of 2yrs ago.

Dunipace may never have a better chance to reach their biggest final in ~100yrs.

Fairytale - or should it be epic? - continues for Dunipace, as they swat aside HofB to set-up a Final v Broomhill at Linlithgow a fortnight tomorrow. Many will rate their chances of becoming South Challenge champions.

Took a while to play the matches and of course things have changed at all clubs since the start of the tournament until the semi final stages - however that is the world we are in at the moment.  When the matchdays come along, the boys on the pitch are only interested in winning the game .  Looking forward to the final and well done to the cup committee for sticking with it and (unless anything dramatic happens in the next two weeks) completing the competition.

Not quite.

The Pace won the Evening Times Trophy in 1999.

The central region sectional league cup they won in the late 80s was probably quite a big deal at the time as well. Finals for that drew reasonably big crowds (2000 or so) at Fir Park in Motherwell in that era from what I remember. The SCC final hasn't developed into that sort of scale of event yet. Best thing that could happen to do that in as short a timeframe as possible would be a merger with the SJC.

Which changes nothing. It's the same cup with a different name

The final of the SJC still draws up to 5000 or so and is an event that resonates well beyond hardcore regulars. Having South rather than Scottish in the name of this cup competition is not a recipe for success for doing something similar.

Seems like a crowd w**k alert here.

What's the chances of a 5k junior cup final crowd now or are you still living in the past?

The South of Scotland has gained many new clubs what's to stop the likes of an Auchinleck v Berwick Rangers Pollok v Bonnyrigg South Cup final attracting beyond that figure.

Given the right promotions, advertising sponsors etc the south cup final could easily match your figures.

After all the BBC have been quick to follow non league fortunes in the  Scottish cup over the past few seasons and might just take an interest to this competition.

What's  maybes needed though is an all in Non league Scottish cup.

It's already been made public that it's been looked at, they're a bit busy with bigger concerns like finally sorting out their respective league structures and the COVID.

And the SJFA have come out and said that the Junior Cup is now open to anyone Tier 6 and below. So they can try and keep their blazers.

The South Region Challenge Cup and the SJFA Scottish Cup were never meant to be the same thing or equivalent to each other. We're probably going to see a new competition created eventually.

Which is literally what I suggested should happen five posts up. At some point people need to finally let go of this senior vs junior thing and move on.

The South Region Challenge Cup is as it says on the tin a competition for teams in the South therefore never was or can be a national competition.

There is no comparison whatsoever.

Who is holding on to the senior vs junior thing?

Hanging onto the Junior Cup certainly isn't "moving on" either given Junior football is effectively gone, certainly south of Dundee.  The Junior label really needs buried once and for all and we can all move on under the banner of "football".

I suppose it’s a compromise with the SJFA running of the Midland and North Region leagues.

At least now all the leagues are now under the pyramid banner, is a start to something which should have happened years ago.

Who knows what will happen to the SJC in the years to come as the traditionalists die off the younger generation who both run and support teams may no longer have the appetite for it and it will run its course.

None of the EOSL clubs who were formerly juniors were in any rush to rejoin it so that perhaps tells a story.

Basic highlights. A non-league Scottish Cup is being looked into by the senior leagues. The SJFA have expanded their cup to be open to all Tier 6 leages and below and would be open to Tier 5. It's a work in progress and all that's happening is Junior v. Senior tit for tat nonsense.

As for the 2019-20 SCC Final.

I think Broomhill should come out in their old BSC Glasgow kit. Since that's how they started the competition. They could maybe try and flog off any of their old merchandise stock as the final appearance of the original BSC Glasgow.
