And overall their results are improving so they are learning and getting better through playing against SPFL teams
How are they improving? More teams won because they were playing worse teams in the first round. Only three got through last night, which isn't very different at all to previous years.

No colts teams got through the second round last season by defeating an SPFL team.  Only one has previously defeated an SPFL team in round 2 before as far as I can make out with a quick look see

Stranraer have major injury problems and had to field 5 of their reserves (who play in the South of Scotland League). One of the Sevco colts' players was apparently worth 2 million.

Pretty certain that “colt” player was Grezda, paped out to train with the youngsters as Rangers are wanting rid of him. An Albanian internationalist but on last nights showing not even worth £2k.

Why would you specifically make this about the 2nd Round? As mentioned earlier, the restructure of the tournament meant that the quality of the SPFL clubs in the 2nd Round is likely to be lower on average than previous seasons (since most are only entering at this stage).

"Colts" wins v SPFL clubs

2016/17: 5 (Hearts v Stirling, Celtic v Annan, Motherwell v Edinburgh City, Partick Thistle v Clyde, Celtic v Cowdenbeath)
2017/18: 3 (Ross County v Forfar, Hamilton v Edinburgh City,  Motherwell v Queen's Park)
2018/19: 1 (Livingston v Forfar) [also Motherwell v Sligo]
2019/20: 5 (Hearts v Albion Rovers, Celtic v Queen's Park, Hearts v Cowdenbeath, St Mirren v Dumbarton, Rangers v Stranraer)

You can buy a 2l bottle of water for less than 50p in most supermarkets. Surely Cowden aren't *that* hard up?

Getting things for free tends to be better than paying for them.
