2019/20 Challenge Cup

Recommended Posts

Was there not a suggestion that at least two of the four foreign nations wouldn't be entering teams?

If the format does stay the same...

Preliminary Round (4 teams)

  • Fraserburgh vs Formartine Utd
  • Kelty Hearts vs Spartans

First Round (48 teams)

  • 10 teams from Championship
  • 10 teams from League One
  • 10 teams from League Two
  • Cove Rangers, Brora Rangers and Fraserburgh/Formartine Utd
  • East Kilbride, BSC Glasgow, Kelty Hearts/Spartans
  • 12 Colt teams from Premiership

Second Round (32 teams)

  • 24 First Round winners
  • 2 teams from NI Premiership
  • 2 teams from League of Ireland Premier
  • 2 teams from Welsh Premier
  • 2 teams from National League

Any word on the foreign sides?

No idea. It's been rumoured Conference and Eire sides aren't interested.

I was going to say at least it couldn't be made any worse but then I remembered the first year of the new arrangement with a silly number of rounds and foreign sides entering at Last 16. Who knows.

Better not mention the possibility of creating a group stage to create extra games for the colt teams then...

Plenty of clubs have been pretty open about their disdain for this competition. How has it managed to keep on going?

Last year we changed the whole team for this, it's tough to get motivated about a competition when your club's not even bothered.

Rough quote from our chairman said at our recent supporters meeting was ‘we have to play in it’.

Get the impression if it became ‘opt in’ there would be a load of withdrawals.

That said foreign teams seem to be allowed to deny entry, delay games for several months and pull out of matches witthout consequence, spfl clubs should start asking for the same flexibility.

Stories that lower leagues had to accept the colts and foreign sides in return for the top league agreeing to the group stages in the League Cup.

In the Trust update on the Thistle official site it was mentioned there is proposed plans for Championship sides to enter a round later than previously.

This season everyone started in R1 bar 8 foreign teams. Even then 4 HL/LL teams had to play Prelims.

All else being equal: Championship sides entering R2 would force 24 teams into Prelims?

Proposal seems to be for round 3. Not sure on the details but obviously that’s not just 1 round later.

24 playing ‘prelims’ or 12 teams kicked out... oh look here’s 12 diddy teams who add nothing to the competition and are only entering to provide training for their players, perhaps they should leave?

If 18 teams (10 Championship and 8 foreign) come in at R3, you need 14 ties in R2. You need to cut 32 teams (10 League One, 10 League Two, 12 Colts) plus any Highland/Lowland League entrants down to 28 teams.

Maybe...

Round 1: 12 Colts plus Berwick, East Kilbride, Brora Rangers, Fraserburgh. (16 teams to 8 teams)

Round 2: 10 League One clubs, 10 League Two clubs plus R1 winners. (28 teams to 14 teams)

Round 3: 10 Championship clubs, Waterford, Bohemians, 2 clubs from ENG/WAL/NI plus R2 winners. (32 teams to 16 teams)
