Not sure exactly how this seeding business works.........

We were UNSEEDED in QR2 in 14,15,16 when we drew the seeded Groningen, Rijeka and Ventspils.

We were SEEDED in QR2 in 17 and drew Siroki Brijeg.

We were UNSEEDED in QR2 last season and drew Burnley.

Now we are seeded again.

Each team is ranked by the total number of club coefficient points they get over a five year period:  https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method5/trank2019.html

Half the teams are seeded for each qualifying round.

They changed the way coefficient were calculated ahead of 18-18.

Previously the club coefficient was your club points + 20% of your country's point total. Now it's the higher of your club points or 20% of the country's total. So that impacted us last season just as we'd started to build up enough points to get seeded at the QR2 stage.

Strange then, how we earned more points for going out in QR2 last season, than we did for going out in QR3 on the previous four seasons.

And on this, again ahead of last season, they changed the number of club points you get for being eliminated at various stages.

Previously QR1 = 0.25, QR2 = 0.5, QR3 = 1.0, QR4 = 1.5

Now PR = 0.5, QR1 = 1.0, QR2 = 1.5, QR3, = 2.0, QR4 = 2.5

So essentially they've f**ked us over?   meaning getting to QR3, which was quite tricky for us certainly in 14 and 15 when we needed to beat clubs from good leagues in QR2, is now dimished, compared to what it would be now.

They've fucked over teams by reducing the number of qualifiers spots in the UCL last season. So in turn they gave all the UCL champions path losers a way into the UEL group stage with 8 of them guaranteed to qualify via a champions path. This has reduced the number of UEL league path qualifiers from 22 to 13.

But Aberdeen will be seeded in both QR1 and QR2, so you have a decent chance of getting to QR3. Need to hope you get a lucky draw and beat one of the poorer seeded teams at that stage and then you can take their place in QR4 and then you'll be playing an unseeded team for a shot at the group stage (like Rangers did last season by beating Maribor then playing Ufa).

Everyone's in the same boat obviously, but yeah, if the entire five years of qualifying results had been at the 'new' rate, we'd be on the cusp of being seeded all the way through to QR3 this year.

  • 3 weeks later...

Tre Fiori would be my preference in terms of an away day.

Secondly Rovaniemi would be some away day - capital of Lapland. Always slightly wary about playing teams half way through their season though they should still be pretty pish.

Ireland would be class in terms of fan numbers, but maybe not as exciting a tie.

Hope everyones got their tickets booked for Gdańsk.

Not sure there's that much point looking at Tre Fiori as they'll probably get beat from the Faroe Islands team. A team from the British Isles is probably the safest route through to the next round.
