Always the Sons 71 Report post Posted June 6, 2020 8-1 victory over Dundee United.Hopefully those days return I saw this on a tweet today and was amazed at the number of goals across the competition. Were there special rules/incentives? I looked up the competition and Clyde scored an amazing 38 goals in 6 first round games. Even Dumbarton scored 10 in one game !!Clyde and Brechin both reached the semi final that year but even back then the warmed up numbered balls were in operation, as Celtic and Rangers avoided each other !

David W 2,678 Report post Posted June 7, 2020 Sadly can remember two 7-1s and two 8-1s in a ten year period that didn't go in our favour. My favourite being Barry Ferguson's all-out attack with wing-backs playing as wingers approach at Ibrox.

Pretty sure we were 5-0 down at HT and we came out for the second half lining up the exact same . Edited June 7, 2020 by ScottR96
SLClyde 704 Report post Posted June 7, 2020 Ferguson probably went home absolutely chuffed that night that his team had stuck 8 goals in.
Bully Wee Villa 8,894 Report post Posted June 7, 2020 We did score the last goal, in fairness. Poor tactics not to shout "next goal wins" as it was heading for the net.
Scott-Replay 988 Report post Posted June 7, 2020 IIRC, that 5-3 game was an absolute stinker too. Two shite teams who were deservedly right down the bottom of the league.

We had Ross McKinnon policing midfield and Frances on at left-back. Gordon Young came on as well. That was basically the end of Sweeney (thank god).
Clyde85 22 Report post Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) We had our pink top on that day if I remember only wore it twice and got beat both times! Kevin Watt scored our consolation. Edited June 7, 2020 by Clyde85

An even worse top than the Man U grey effort.

SLClyde 704 Report post Posted June 7, 2020 I remember John Sweeney was described as a club legend at one time, a reminder of how bad we really were.

They really were darker days than we thought they were at the time. Thank f**k for Danny Lennon and Alan Moore

During lockdown I've been watching a couple of the highlights videos most days. I am currently in Duffy's first full season, where John Neill is literally our only hope of a goal (and he spends half the time with his head in his hands) and the opposition can score just by playing a ball inside Lee Sharp once a game. That was the season Sweeney mania really took off, because he scored a couple of crackers in the first couple of games. That team at one point went 18 games with only one win against the Shire to speak of. We conceded 22 goals in five trips to Montrose across a couple of seasons Horrendous times.
