Steve Clarke's coaching team

Cathro is a bumbling idiot, no way is he going to entice and engage players.

He obviously trusts Dyer so looking likely he will join and says he is talking to one or two others, heard the players really enjoyed working with Callum Davidson whilst he was working with them so may be someone like him rather than the big name like Fletcher.

That said, nobody epitomises what it means to play for Scotland more than Darren Fletcher so would be great to get him on board in some capacity, has he officially retired?

Fletcher has never coached anybody in his life.  Cathro is one of the best coaches in Europe.  You're a bumbling idiot.

Wolves and ex Valencia manager says he's the best coach he's ever seen in his life.  He invented a coaching method copied all over Europe.  You're some chump on the internet.

You can quite clearly be an excellent coach and also shockingly out of your depth as a manger. You’re confusing the two.

Incredible news that two entirely different jobs need different skill sets.

Yeah the distinction is that Cathro is a highly-respected coach, but was a complete failure as a manager.  He could be an interesting addition to the Scotland backroom team.

I've never said he wasn't a good coach, he is not one of the best coaches in Europe as stated and is also a bumbling idiot which is clear during his horrendous tenure at Hearts, he wont be near the Scotland set up which is good.

He was head of a Dundee United's Youth Development programme at 22, assistant at Valencia and Newcastle and now works at Wolves.  You can argue that he's not one of the best in Europe, but it's clear he's got something about him considering how early he got himself into excellent jobs. To say it's a good thing to have a clearly good coach not involved, purely off the back of him stumbling his words in an interview, is a bit baffling.

Pep talks some amount of pish, but calling out the deriding of a rated coach in Ian Cathro while in the same breath praising someone completely unproven in Darren Fletcher because he knows "what it means to play for Scotland" is spot on.

f**k it, I know what it would mean to play for Scotland, can I get a job sitting looking gormless on the Scotland bench too?

A "bumbling idiot" who has been labelled a "genius" by top managers. His mistake, as he says, was taking the job half way through the season, instead of the beginning, when he could bring in his own team and his own players.

Brendan Rodgers said that there was a disconnect at Hearts where Cathro wanted to put in a certain footballing philosophy and Levein signed players that were wholly unsuited to a more technical game.

I think it says a great deal about the technical malaise of scottish footballers that a visionary coach whose work on technique, touch and management of space is lauded by European managers was hounded out of Scottish football.

I, for one, would love to see him back in some capacity.

Not just how early he got the first jobs, but how quickly he bounced back from a horror show in management into yet another good role. It's almost as if he's a good coach.

He was perhaps labelled as a good coach by those "top managers", but was never judged as a manager, which is a completely different job.

Several of the signings who were brought in during his time were clearly his type of player - Tziolis had 75 caps for Greece, Martin was a technical midfielder, Struna was an international full-back, Goncalves was his man who he had worked with previously. The idea that he was left with a bunch of useless cloggers to try to mould into a team is complete nonsense. He was so obviously out of his depth as a manager, regardless of the personnel he had available. That Hearts squad which he took over was sitting 4th in the league when he took over and he only won 5 of his 21 league games with them.

He may well be a fantastic coach, but he clearly wasn't suited to a manager's job at the time. That's not to say he'll never make it as a manager - he's only 32 now and still has lots of time to develop in terms of man-management and some of the other things which he was clearly lacking during his time at Hearts.

Tommy Wright would be a great appointment IMO. He's worked with Clarke before and seems to know him well, it's quite common for full-time managers to take the additional role. Failing that, Stephen Robinson has experience working with Northern Ireland and seems a really good coach. Dyer seems liked but don't know enough about him.

I think going for Wright and then a 'loveable' dimwit with good relations with the players (kind of like what McCoist was to Walter Smith) would be a great management team.

He's worked under Sam Allardyce, Steve Coppell, Avrum Grant, Chris Powell & Gianfranco Zola, joined West Ham as assistant fitness coach working his way up to reserve team coach before joining Powell as assistant manager at Charlton & Huddersfield Town. He was a PE teacher before getting involved in football......

I think it should be the same as with any other football management job, that the SFA bring in whoever Steve Clarke wants as his assistants. There is no need for them to be bringing in anyone else unless Clarke wants them.
