Yes - unwashed coal's the worst (what China burns), washed coal's second worst, gas next, but gas is waaaaaaay less bad. The UK now emits as much CO2 as it did in the 1890s, we're getting there.

Cheers! Why don't China just wash it before they burn it if it makes a marked difference. Producing less emmisons than 1890 when our population has nearly doubled is pretty impressive

It is an extra step that costs money and life, human or otherwise, in China is cheap so they don't feel like they need to. I hope this'll change as even doing this one thing would be a huge improvement.

Do you have something to back up that? China is obviously a big polluter, but it is most definitely trying to do something about it now.

I'm delighted to be wrong here! That's great they're starting to do something about it.

If you read the article, you'll see they've been putting major resources into this for at least a decade now - they're hardly 'starting'.

I drove past a convoy of trucks hauling what I think was a pre-fab building of some description. Hope it wasn't the guy that bought one on here, the 3 huge trucks plus escort vehicles coming from the north Highlands can't be particularly efficient [emoji51]

Probably less polluting than the continual procession of lorries and dumper trucks to a building site.

I see a business opportunity! Strap mobile phone masts to trees.

They're going to have to if 5G ever expands from major cities. The phone companies are already fighting for every urban lamppost.

I’m green as f**k when I can be arsed. Vote Green. Separate all my stuff into the correct bins and even do food recycling.

Tried to educate my father-in-law on recycling in that wet wipes, biscuit wrappers, crisp packets and tin foil don’t go in the green bin.

Fife is only recycling 51% of its waste which doesn’t really surprise me. Think it’ll be a tough ask for them to get to 70% by 2025.

I take the train to work and walk quite a lot but the wife combats that by driving a diesel VW Touran which spews out diesel fumes and particulates.

What can you do? Voting Green is my new cuddly Lib-Dem vote to make myself feel better.

There’s another one of these ‘reduce your plastics’ programmes on now.

War on plastic.

Whenever I watch these I just think ‘pissing in the wind’.

If you want to make a huge saving on plastic, cut up your wife's credit card.

It's not "pissing in the wind" though is it?

If everyone thought these programmes were a complete waste of time then they wouldn't be on.

If one of these shows manages to (at the very least) make the "can't be arsed" brigade think about the global damage being caused then its doing its job imo.

I nearly gave you a greenie... but then you're a lino licker so f**k that;)

A few steps I have taken recently to reduce my plastic use:

Use canvas bags for my shopping. I’ve got a few that I leave in the car. I refuse to use plastic bags, there’s no need for it. I was dismayed yesterday when I noticed the CO-OP weren’t using the green biodegradable bags in my local store and have gone back to plastic. I am going to investigate this.

Using soap from Lush. It’s stored in a metal tin. It’s not cheap though and I was considering packing it in if it doesn’t last a month but it looks like I’ll be fine. Get a good wash out of it as well.

My next toothbrush will be a wooden/bamboo one. Holland & Barrett do them I think so going to have a look today. Will need to read about how it’s produced and and how sustainable it is if it’s getting exported here.

Remembered this thread after seeing the 'Disposable Vapes' discussion earlier today. I've recently been carrying out a eco-friendly transition on my toiletries. In addition to the soap tin and bamboo toothbrush mentioned above, I've recently purchased:

A re-fillable deodorant stick. There are a few options but I went with Fussy because I prefer the design of the stick and the scents they do. Anyone who fancies trying it send me a PM and I'll give you a 50% referral discount code.

Georganics toothpaste in a glass jar, 100% recyclable and vegan.

Waken Mouthwash. I haven't bought this yet but will when my current stuff runs out. 100% recycled plastic bottle, carbon neutral, vegan and made with natural products. Optional metal serving cup which looks nifty.

Every time I get a green dot on pie and Bovril dot com I buy an acre of Brazilian rainforest to protect it from ranchers.

Ever time I get a red dot I smash open the back of a fridge and shoot a panda in the head with a captive bolt gun.

Review of products:

Fussy Deodorant: very good. Scents are nice and I don’t have BO. Only downside is the price, £5 per refill is expensive. You can sometimes find discount codes online to bring the price down.

Waken Mouthwash: also very good. Tastes nice and leaves mouth feeling clean. Also comparable in price to typical mouthwash brands in the shops.

Georganics Toothpaste: shite. Do not recommend. As discussed previously, very high price tag and the toothpaste itself is foul. Has a weird texture to it and it doesn’t really feel like it’s giving my teeth a good clean. I’ve found an eco-toothpaste alternative at Life Supplies who do a reuseable pump and send out recyclable bags of toothpaste. You send the empty bags back to them in the post for free to be recycled. Price comparable to typical toothpaste brands. Will review this toothpaste in future.
