Wayne Rooney wants to know why players are being singled out - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52172196
Other than Matt Hancock, I haven't really seen anyone taking shots at the players. Clubs that have made certain choices have however been rightly lambasted.

He lives in a world of tabloid absolutes.

All the players taking a wage cut will result in is the club owners getting richer.

I suspect that the media pressure on the players is due to the fact that if the players take a wage cut it will be easier for the EPL to work out a deal with Sky, BT, the BBC and other broadcasters regarding how to settle up for the shorter season.

There are idiots who seem to think that the players not taking a wage cut is somehow related to the clubs furloughing other employees. The owners are mainly billionaires and can afford to pay everyone.

The owners that have done so have rightly been criticised for their sponging whilst still continuing to pay the players in full.

Again, Hancock aside I haven't seen the players themselves taking much heat. I imagine a lot of them are thoroughly embarrassed at the position their club has put them in, but can't say that in public without serious repurcussion.

The players have been getting singled out a lot by the "support are NHS" (formerly "support are troops) lot on social media.

Hancock is one of the most prominent people in the country right now, so his views hold a lot of weight with a lot of people.

I usually think the PFA are a bunch of useless arseholes, but I feel like their position on this is fully justified. A pay cut does absolutely nothing to help anyone beyond the wealthy club owners.

I hadn't seen any of that, but fair enough if they are. In terms of people whose opinions actually matter, I have only seen Hancock comment after he was asked a question about players specifically.

It is entirely the fault of certain clubs that this has happened owing to the ridiculous position they have taken RE furloughing. They have rightly taken a lot of criticism for their position as well. This should of course been pointed out, but unfortunately it wasn't.

I don't blame the players, this is entirely on some club owners taking government money they don't need. Naturally some don't quite grasp the nuances of this (including Matt Hancock). The owners really have shown themselves up for what they are. They can afford to pay their non-playing staff in full, but just don't want to. If they genuinely cannot afford to do so in the way that some clubs further down are encountering, then the players wages would also have been cut, which I'm sure they would've. They are sending out an absolutely dismal message here and are placing a burden on UK taxpayers for no reason at all.

Unfortunately, players will inevitably take some heat as a result of the club's decision. I have no doubt a lot of them are angry at what their club has done, which has left them in a crappy position. They can't really say much about this without causing some possibly serious internal issues, though. That said, I don't think the PFA statement was very well advised even if they are right to defend the players. They should've turned the spotlight on the club owners making these decisions rather than try and play some moral case about tax money going to the NHS ,with questionable at best figures included.

Liverpool have reversed their furloughing decision. Whilst commendable, what did they expect the reaction to be after Spurs and Newcastle did it previously?

No doubt another "administrative error".

Someone on the totally football show podcast said that they reckoned it would cost them about a million quid to pay the non playing staff in full for three months and that they'd probably end up paying more than that for a PR firm to smooth the waters after any fallout. Its amazing how short-sighted some of these clubs have been, especially Liverpool with their "This means more" pish and having a well known socialist as a manager.

They only had to look at the reaction to Tottenham and Newcastle. Dreadful call from the board.

Whether Liverpool should/shouldn't have done it is an argument for another time but there are other companies, with far greater turnovers and profit, furloughing staff who aren't in the public eye. I got no qualms with folk having a go at football clubs but I do find it went that football clubs and football players are getting it in the neck when property developers, investment bankers and other serpentine capitalists aren't. Liverpool could, quite rightly, point to the work they do in their city, the income the city makes from themselves and the huge amount of taxes they and their staff pay and ask why companies paying a pittance via the Cayman Islands aren't being held to the same accountability
