English Premier League 2019-20

Recommended Posts

Bruno Fernandes speaks significantly better English than Harry Maguire.

ETA: And now Maguire is talking utter bollocks about the incident where he should have been sent off. "I was trying to hold him up by sticking out my leg" is up there with Principal Skinner going into the Burlesque House to get directions away from it.

I’m the same. The whole best league in the world stuff is utter fucking nonsense. The game is dead in the top division down south

Anyone that claims it is best league in the world is an idiot. The most watched league on the planet yes, as that’s a fact.

You'll have to post up proof of that, tbh.
As short as a couple of months ago there was weeks upon weeks of controversy in Germany. Just because it isn't reported on doesn't mean you can say it 'works perfectly'.

we hear all about any controversial VAR nonsense in England so we think it works worse in England

This is the best example of availability bias I’ve ever come across

At least in the last half hour

Really?

This is from someone who watches the Bundesliga every week as a commentator.

That's because he's employed to make the Bundesliga more attractive and in turn get himself more exposure.

A quick Google will even show you a news article in May saying "VAR is the wrong path to go down" that many folk in Germany want rid of it.

47% of those directly affected by it - the players - voted to bin it. Seems a bit weird it'd be that high if it 'works perfectly'.

No, he's a freelance commentator who's more than happy to speak his mind about any issues in any league he happens to be covering.

So what we've got to here is that VAR is working 'perfectly' on the continent because some freelance commentator you follow on Twitter says so?

Okay.

Aye but its easy to set them up for the big games, sit in and hit on the break.  He has shown he isn't so good when they have to break the opposition down.
While that is certainty true in general, last night's game didn't really have the same pattern with United having a lot more possession than they normally do in these games, certainly in the first half and Chelsea weren't exactly hitting United with wave after wave of attack.

On the subject of VAR being better/worse in some countries...
Rather than the system, could it possibly be because the people operating it are at a higher standard than they are in England?

How can it be operated to a higher standard elsewhere? It’s a system of refereeing that uses technology that is able to pick up everything that takes place on a football pitch and get reviewed within a matter of seconds. With that there is going to be things that would never normally have been picked up by a referee on the pitch being awarded as well as the obvious delays when reviewing big moments. I’m not sure how anyone can improve on these fundamental flaws of the system and wish nobody had ever thought it up as it feels very Orwellian.
