I am thinking of a wee trip to see the pyramids and valley of the kings etc.
Any tips or advice from anyone who has been?
Don't go to Luxor in the summer as it can be 45+ degrees.

This. Karnak was definitely worth a visit but the Valley of the Kings was a chore in the heat. Had a wee trip on a felucca which was nice with a bit of river breeze. Aswan was horrible, locals especially unpleasant after asking if there was beer anywhere when it felt like the end of Ice Cold in Alex. The Cairo Museum was great, but when we went to see the pyramids it was so fucking hot, and hustlers swarming, we got the taxi to drop us off at a posh hotel with an air conditioned cocktail bar with a great view of them, separated  only by double glazing. Recommend traveling around the place by train, you see stuff of normal life you wouldn't any other way.

Cheers.

I had heard you get a load of hassle from hawkers and you have to be quite firm.

Thinking of taking the train down from Cairo to Luxor. The overnight train works out only a bit more expensive than flying and would save a couple of nights accomodation.:thumsup2

Hopefully you'll get a bit of daylight on it, think that was my favourite bit.

Yeah the hawkers at the Pyramids are a nightmare especially the little kids as it is a wall to wall guilt trip. You have to be really firm but If you really start getting pissed off then walk towards one of the tourist police as they are scared of going near them, with good reason as someone got a hefty thump from one of them when I was there.

I'd recommend your girlfriend dresses relatively conservatively to avoid getting gawked at, especially in Cairo. My girlfriend wore a dress that turned out to be see through under neon, and it got a bit uncomfortable.

I went about 20 years ago and we hadn't booked hotels. Plane was delayed and we arrived about 2 am to be faced by a mob of taxi touts. Chose the biggest one who escorted us out to his taxi. Asked him to take us to a cheap hotel and ended up in an utter shithole. Went walking the next day and my girlfriend tripped and cut her leg in an exposed sewer. Found a great doctor in a very up to date clinic on a back street and he sorted her out for pennies. Had trouble crossing a busy road later that day and found an overhead pass which turned out to be full of fish heads and entrails. Things picked up after that.

Bit of a journey from Cairo.

Worth it tho. Museum was only thing i enjoyed in Cairo

Aye, not nearly as far as I thought it was and I see you don't have to go through Israel. Not much further than Luxor. Did you go there direct from Cairo?

I cant honestly remember where we went from, we done a cruise called the red sea magic. We visited the pyramids, valley of the kings and Petra. The treasury was spectacular..... the walk back up was a shocker tho.

I wasn't impressed with the pyramids at all, far to many suspect police around it amd the constant hassle from boys trying to sell you shite. Cairo as a place was far to busy for me although i did enjoy the museum, especially the section of the mummies. valley of the kings was pretty good, there was an ight show at night which i enjoyed.

Petra is outstanding, but surely a bit of a trek from Cairo.

Maybe the ship parked up at Aqaba in Jordan, not far from Petra.

I went as a kid, think it was a cruise from Cyprus, it was ridiculously hot and insanely busy. I'd never seen so many people before! I loved the pyramids as we got to go down into one (not for the claustrophobic), but the Sphinx was up on bricks. Scaffolding all round it as I think its nose had been shot off in some war and they were repairing it.

I absolutely loved Cairo. All of it. The Museum was just ridiculous. Spent two full days and didn’t see it all. I don’t know what the new location is like.

The street hassle is everywhere, but if you prepare for it and are firm about it, they quickly move on. You are expected to tip for absolutely everything though.
