2019/20 Scottish Cup

Deveronvale 1-2 Spartans

Brilliant result for Spartans.

Players had to arrange half-days off work with their employers yesterday or this morning... left Edinburgh at 2pm... presumably arrived in Banff about 6pm... kicked-off 8pm... took the lead early but quickly pegged-back to 1-1... had a man sentoff at the death... only score the winner as the tie entered stoppage time. Given circumstances plus their wasted expense on Friday that feels appropriate.

EDIT: Also means Edinburgh City v Banks o'Dee will presumably be Friday 18th - maybe Sunday 20th.

By special condition City's ties in this cup don't get priority over Spartans games.

Won't be Sunday - the SFA have the ground booked out all day for an under-17 women's international. Friday or Saturday evening, possibly. Depends on what Banks o' Dee think.

We only have priority use of Ainslie Park for League games; Spartans are priority users in the Scottish Cup.

Anyone familiar with where are Spartans quality wise compared with when they dumped us out of the cup in 2006? Assume Edinburgh City's rise and the new pyramid might have hurt them a wee bit? Saw they lost 3-1 at home on Saturday.

They have gone backward a bit. Finished distant 4th last season (only overtaking CSS on last day) and currently running 8th with 15pts from 8 games. They were beaten by Berwick in the EOS Qualifying Cup, thrashed 5-0 by Kelty and have lost at home to BSCG and Caledonian Braves. Equally would be foolish to write them off.

As expected most of the potential 16 postponements or 16 replays would be a week on Saturday with these 4 exceptions:

* Cowdenbeath v Broxburn ... if postponed then next attempt Tuesday 29th October - postponing Broxburn v Newtongrange
* Lochee v BSCG ... if drawn then replay Sunday 27th October (Alloa at home Sat)
* Spartans v Queen's Park ... if drawn then replay Tuesday 29th October - postponing Berwick v Spartans in EOS Cup SF
* Stirling Uni v Linlithgow ... if postponed then next attempt Wednesday 30th October

I was at that game in 06, Spartans are nowhere near as good these days.

Suspect that was a rotten watch on TV. Torrential rain all day long had left he pitch very soft and neither side really got to grips with it. It was dry or drizzle during the tie but bucketed late-on.

Bonnyrigg came out of the traps and dominated opening 5-10mins, then it evened-out but Buckie had control of the middle period of the half and the hosts lived dangerously a few times. Referee was very liberal throughout the game until the closing stages - often letting heavy challenges and obstructions go or sufficing with another telling off - but booked Lee Currie for a fairly unremarkable foul. Sharp clearance from Brett and a good save from home 'keeper kept it 0-0 but Bonnyrigg came into it as HT approached.

Second half they were much the better - Buckie only forced a couple of saves from set pieces - and a mishit cross, then a mazy run from Rose's sub striker, were enough to earn a deserved win overall.

Excellent crowd of almost 1,700.

Another marker of the seismic shift in eastern non-league football over the last 2 years... Bonnyrigg, top of LL at kickoff, march into Scottish Cup R3 beating HL leaders by floodlight live on TV.

Fair play to BBC Scotland, they gave the match tonight proper respect with plenty of cameras and a full team on the ground. The football may not have been great but the clinching goal was genuine quality.

I'm hoping Stirling Uni v Linlithgow is off on Sunday, we're in Pitlochry with family for the weekend and I'm insisting on being an anti-social arse and coming down for the game.
