2019/20 Scottish Cup

Recommended Posts

I think the last time there were over 100 clubs was back in 1894/95 - the following season the Scottish Qualifying Cup was introduced. The Qualifying Cup(s) remained in place* until 2006/07, and limited the number non-league entrants to 8.
*There was a brief three year hiatus in the 1950s where the tournament was "all-in" like it is now, but only 76/77 clubs entered as far as I can see.

I suppose we could add on qualifying cup entries as well as these in practice were basically preliminary rounds.

I don't have numbers on qualifying cup entries, so it would be hard to know when numbers involved dropped below 100. But I don't think it should count anyway - it was a distinct competition from the Scottish Cup. If you start including that you could also make an argument for including all the teams who competed in the Junior Cup, Amateur Cup, Alex Jack Cup, Alba Cup etc for the coming season since the winners of those also have a path into the Scottish Cup.

Aye, I had a quick look and anything other than final results seem difficult to find.

The reason I’d class it differently is because it was completed in the same season, all the other competitions are played the season before.

There was a book of Scottish Qualifying Cup results published in the 1990s by Stewart Davidson who organised the recently defunct annual Scottish Non League Review publications. He brought out a couple of update booklets - the last after the North and South Qualifying Cups were abolished in 2007.

Results in the Qualifying Cup were never considered part of the Scottish Cup. If nothing else the cups ran on to the Final, even after clubs had qualified (the rules surrounding which varied over the years - indeed the number of cups varied from a national tournament to the familiar North and South: but also North, a Midland and South for a brief period). Until the early 1920s only about 16 clubs qualified for the Scottish Cup automatically and this meant that some top division clubs had to enter the Qualifying Cup... they very often scratched once they passed the qualifying point.

You would also have to consider the Scottish Consolation Cup, which operated for a few years before WWI for clubs eliminated in the Qualifying Cup before that point.

Any news on a draw date yet for the Prelim rounds?

Nothing yet, last year they announced the details on Friday 13th ahead of the draw on Monday 16th so I assume we'll know something this week.
