Yes, the boy born in Lambeth, to parents from the Ivory Coast, is definitely Scottish.

If we're defining things, he's either English or Ivorian.  In football terms, he can be Scottish, Ivorian or English.  He sounds like he's choosing England either because he feels English, doesn't feel particularly Scottish, or just wants the best from a short career given the talent he has, or a mix of all of them.  My money's on the latter though.

And to be honest, although I'd love for him to represent us, people like you will only cement his decision.

What absolute nonsense. Where a person is raised is material to a person's sense of nationality. For myself it would be the most important factor by a long way.

This.  He's Scottish.

Yeah? Where’s the next British grand slam winner?
1 winner in 20 years since Andy went to Spain isn’t working well for tennis. It’s worked for him great. Sport didn’t capitalise at all on his success.

Ignore my ignorance in matters of tennis but in the men’s game what country has had more than one male win a grand slam in the last 20 years?

Do you think the Swiss approach to tennis is poor because they have only had 1 winner in 20 years?

And for you, that's fine.  But it's not necessarily for him.  He may not even feel particularly English or Scottish given his Ivorian parents.  You really can't tell.

But all of it is, frankly, irrelevant.  He'll choose who he wants to play with, and if that isn't us then that's very disappointing, but it's neither surprising nor worth overly lamenting.  We have far more problems to worry about rather than castigating a 16 year old for making a career choice.

No, mainly because they've had two. Three if you include women.

Probably because they were practising tennis while the rest of us were fighting Jerry...

But you've claimed that he is either Ivorian or English only which is patently bollocks given that he was raised in Scotland and is entitled to feel Scottish.

Well, Switzerland for one. USA and Spain for others. Women’s game has multiple nationalities winning slams. Both also have multiple nationalities reaching QF’s and SF’s on a regular basis.

Britain hasn’t capitalised on Murray’s success in the slightest. Might be another hundred years before the next male champion. Women’s game is piss poor. Our best player is Australian!

Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer are both Swiss, as far as I'm aware.

Anyway, USA, Spain and Argentina have all produced more than one Winner in the past 20 years.  The problem with the comparison to Tennis is that period is that 3 men, widely regarded as the 3 best ever, have dominated the grand slams for the best part of the past 20 years.

There was some suggestion earlier in the thread that he didn’t look that great, I thought his touch and awareness was fantastic for a 16 year old. He favoured an early 20 yard weighted pass over unnecessary multiple step overs, and this for me is a sign of a good player. Looking ahead, the only thing holding him back might be pace but this could be linked to height, as he’s still tiny. The other downside is him apparently being English.

Both of you clearly know more than me :)

Not Gary Caldwell though.

Just think, on another timeline, the SFA looked at Caldwell saying "i'm the best man for the job" and replied with "you know what, heid?  You're right!"

Looking pretty bright for celtic so far. Hopefully he develops as well as is expected. Would be nice if he chose to represent scotland

If he plays for Scotland hope he's pele, it not hope he's a fat waster stacking shelves in Tesco at 25 after a spell in rehab.
