ICTChris
Lyra McKee, a 29 year old journalist, was killed last night, shot while covering a riot in the Creggan area of Derry. The riot had occurred following police raids on houses in the area. The raids were against suspected dissident republicans, who have previously attacked police around Easter, the anniversary of the 1916 Rising. During rioting petrol bombs were thrown at police and a masked gunman appeared to fire shots in the direction of police, one of which hit Lyra McKee. Derry has been something of a stronghold for the dissident republicans. Various groupings exist and some have come together in recent years to form a group known as the 'New IRA' and have been responsible for a large number of low level attacks, including previous rioting in Derry. The group is also thought to have sent letter bombs to Waterloo station, City of London airport and Glasgow University earlier this year. These groups are also involved with criminal activity and 'policing' communities by shooting drug dealers, although often with paramilitary groups in Ireland this is a cover for their own drug dealing and criminality. The DUP, SDLP, Sinn Fein and British Northern Ireland secretary have all condemned the shooting, as have the Catholic Church in Ireland and the NUJ, who described Lyra McKee as an outstanding journalist.
ICTJohnboy
A Republican March has been arranged to take place in Derry on Monday. That should ease tension in the area. Edited April 19, 2019 by ICTJohnboy

Oh aye, it was the Police's fault that a man took a gun out and shot into a crowd of people.

This is extremely stupid. The reason for these raids was that police received intelligence that there were stores of ammunition and weapons in the houses that were raided. What should a police force do when it receives reliable intelligence about this?

No but it very obviously needs one to fill the vacuum over there. There is the opinion of enough people over for it to be a real societal issue that the PSNI are illegitimate in that particular area . In the exceptional case of derry though, Im not so sure the PSNI have enough public support to carry out any sort of raid without resistance. Quite a self righteous lot you are this morning tbh
