Steven Bell being converted from a decent midfielder who was finished at this level five years ago into some sort of two-bob Franco Baresi figure at the age of 34 is the surest sign that the game's a bogey. Teams could fold, start again from scratch and still put together better teams than the overpaid dung that they've had on the park this season.

Any chairman in the division who fancies speculating to accumulate could do worse than push the boat out on signings next season. The league is there for the taking to anyone with a bit of loose change.

In fact, pretty much what happened this year.

Why Ayr didn't snap off the arm of anyone offering real, genuine money for Shankland in January is a mystery. 


He basically moves from centre forward to wide right. He’s clear not 100% fit, or something, so Ayr just let him drop off wide right and pick him up when he comes into the middle.
