Another reason to turn away from Global Football?

"The move is seen as a means of appeasing the likes of Paris St Germain and Juventus, who have dominated their respective domestic leagues, and have seen revenue streams fall as a result."

We've squeezed everybody out in one area and it's hurt our business, so we need to squeeze everybody out in another area. Brilliant.

I'd no idea Juventus were about to seal eight titles in a row, BTW. Pub league, etc.

More details and diagrams coming out after the meetings this week. Big changes coming in 5 years.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/09/sports/champions-league-europe-restructuring.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

While the Champions League’s main competition will continue to be the 32-team event it is today, UEFA envisages substantial changes to its format to ensure a longer group stage in which teams would play in four groups of eight, with the top four teams qualifying for the knockout stages.

Only four of the 32 places would be reserved for incoming clubs each season.

The new tournaments would, starting in 2024, allow the top 24 teams in a 32-team Champions League to qualify automatically for the next season’s event, effectively guaranteeing them annual participation and tens of millions of dollars more in broadcasting revenue than their domestic rivals would receive.

PSG and Juventus would have a much better chance of winning the Champions League if it was back to the old European Cup format. They should be pushing for that instead of this farcical plan.

Winning it in the old format is worth a lot less cash than getting to the latter stages in the current format...

So 75% of the teams from the Champions League would be automatically in the next seasons?  What an utter load of shite and once again a way to protect the big clubs while fucking over the rest.

Money money money.

To be honest, it's not as much of a leap from the current set up as you'd think.  The number of group stage competitors who were in the previous years group stage too, in recent years;

2018/19 - 18/32, with 5 of those absent in the previous year competing in at least one of the previous again two.

2017/18 - 19/32, with 5 of those absent in the previous year competing in the previous but one.

2016/17 - 18/32

This is a gripe that I've had with the Champions League for years, it's the same teams all the time.  And get annoyed as you want about this, it won't make a blind bit of difference - despite a lot of talk about falling viewership in Europe, the competition continues to do extremely well in Asia, contributing to an overall increase in market share.

What's being talked about is an attempt to lock in certain clubs, taking away the existing risk (albeit fairly small) that the perceived giants won't be competing the following year.

The next step has got to be some kind of independent streaming service so that UEFA are no longer used as a carrot to encourage people to buy expensive TV packages.  Once that's in place, and the cash flows can be relied upon for forecasting etc., it'll be a giant and collective f**k you to the national league set up.

Celtic, you'll be staying with us I'm afraid.  The big boys don't want to play with you.

But from their point of view it’s about a lack of competitive fixtures rather than optimising their chances of winning the European cup

PSG vs Celtic was highly entertaining for most people in Scotland but Parisiens would probably have preferred to see their side against Arsenal or Hertha Berlin

Give it time & finals will be getting played outside of UEFA members imo

Exactly what I was going to say. Guarantee that within ten years the final will be getting played in Saudi Arabia or Qatar. Saudi Arabia are hosting the Spanish Super Cup for the next 6 years also.
