Tonight I revisited The Happy Mondays 1988 album 'Bummed'.  It was the bands second album and was released in November 1988 on Factory [Produced by Martin Hannett].  This is still an excellent album and , in my opinion, was the Monday's at their best.

No. Title Length
1. "Country Song" 3:24
2. "Moving in With" 3:36
3. "Mad Cyril" 4:36
4. "Fat Lady Wrestlers" 3:25
5. "Performance" 4:09
6. "Brain Dead" 3:10
7. "Wrote for Luck" 6:05
8. "Bring a Friend" 3:45
9. "Do It Better" 2:29
10. "Lazy Itis" 2:48

I got my hands on a copy of Doolittle by The Pixies a couple of weeks ago . I hadn't listened to it for about 25 years. I'd forgotten how good it is.

For my money, still as good as it gets. A quite mind blowingly brilliant album.

I love that album. It is easily their best. I love how half of the songs are inspired by the film Performance. I can just imagine Ryder watching that while getting stoned...

I remember as a kid there was a documentary on telly about the twentieth anniversary of Sergeant Pepper (called, unsurprisingly "It was twenty years ago today"). And it seemed like discussing ancient history.

But then you see lists of albums that are twenty years old now and it's like woah, you're shitting me.

The 20th anniversary of SPLHCB was 32 years ago!!!

... Martin Hannett

He was an absolute genius and Joy Division owe their "sound" to him.

Peter Hook has said, at the time, they hated the production on Unknown Pleasures and Closer because, as he put it, they just wanted the albums to sound "RAAAAWWWW" as in the way they sounded live.

It was only after they tried producing themselves (as New Order) that they gained an appreciation of how much he contributed to their success.

I'd been listening to Pills n Thrills a fair bit recently. I think because of the Easter holidays the word "Holiday" got stuck in my head (and in turn the track from Pills n Thrills). Lazy Itis was a bit of an anthem at my first weekend/holiday job. Bez & Shaun levels of drug taking all round. Cheers for posting - got Bummed lined up to listen to now. Had totally forgotten how good they were. Was so happy when Shaun re-appeared with Black Grape.

Picked up a compilation album from a charity shop recently to play in my work car and it had "The Only One I Know" and that got me going back to other Charlatans stuff such as Tellin' Stories (1997). Such a good mix of tracks. Tender stuff like "You're A Big Girl Now" through to euphoric stuff like "How High".

Following on from its 21st anniversary re-release, I've had Rafi's Revenge by Asian Dub Foundation on repeat the past week or so. It is such a great album and has been one of my favourite albums since it came out. There's a tremendous energy to the songs and Dr Das is a ridiculously good bass player. I have only managed to see them live once when they were supporting Radiohead on their 'Hail to the theif' tour. I'm not usually one for protest songs but the track 'Free Satpal Ram' did well to highlight the injustice experienced by a guy who was jailed for 15 years for an act of self defence.

I've recently download (after owning the CD when it came out ) Ideas Above Our Station by Hundred Reasons.

My word, I'd forgotten how good it sounds.  Full of really catchy songs IMO.  I remember catching a glimpse of myself in the video of 'Falter' which was filmed at TITP 2002.  For some reason it's not on Youtube anymore.

I was at high school when that came out, and I went through a phase of wearing a parka jacket zipped up in all weather on the basis of that being the craze at the time. The album - if not the fashion - still stands up.

Bizarro was the second studio album by The Wedding Present and was released in October 1989.  The bands debut album 'George Best' is regarded by many as their best and regularly features in Best Of Indie lists.  Those accolades left this album slightly in the shade but it's still a belter.

Original LP

Side A

  1. "Brassneck" – 4:51
  2. "Crushed" – 2:32
  3. "No" – 4:11
  4. "Thanks" – 2:22
  5. "Kennedy" – 4:20
  6. "What Have I Said Now?" – 5:18

Side B

  1. "Granadaland" – 4:50
  2. "Bewitched" – 6:42
  3. "Take Me!" – 9:15
  4. "Be Honest" – 2:37

I had a Weddoes evening over the weekend, Tommy, George Best and then Bizzaro...good stuff, my favourite track on Bizzaro has to be Bewitched

  • 2 weeks later...

Since watching the profile of Woody Guthrie on bbc4 the other week I've been thinking about Vigilante Man. Will Kaufmann, who was talking about Woody, does a damned good cover of it and Ry Cooder's take is superb but I've just played Razamanaz by Nazareth and have to say, their version is brilliant. Then I realised this album came out in 1973 so definitely fits this thread.

A great old album to revisit.
