St Patrick’s Day - why do so many non-Irish care?

Just wondering why St Patrick’s Day is made such a big deal compared to other patron saints around these islands?

Do pubs in Ireland go mad for St Andrews Day, St David’s Day or St George’s Day? Nope

But we could have four excuses for a bevvy if everyone gave an equal f**k about the others.

Burns Night is coupled, with food and bevy - it’s popular. St Andrew’s Day is a random day associated with nothing - it’s not popular.

The fact that Irish people emigrated en masse to America around the time the major east coast cities were flourishing whereas Scottish people moved to America around the time the slave trade was flourishing and moved to Canada about whose pop culture no one gives a f**k probably plays a part too.

Guinness marketing.

This. Its nothing more than a PR created pile of toot.

Anyone celebrating the day of any  "Saint", apart from Roger Moore, really needs to have a word with themselves.

The Americans go daft for it so the UK follows quickly on behind.

Labour say it will be a bank holiday if they get elected, would that make the UK the only country to have a national holiday for a foreign Patron Saint day?

Christmas started as a Coca Cola campaign. Not a lot of people know that.

It’s also got a good slot in the calendar

November the 30th is just in the run up to Christmas. It’s dark before four and we know it’s going to get darker and colder from here on in.

There are many opinions on here regarding the desirability or otherwise of Scottish independence. I don’t expect you all to agree on that but surely we can all agree that if there is to be an Independence Day it should be in the summer

Well norn iron is still just part of the UK so it's not a foreign Saint

Is he not the Patron Saint of Ireland rather than the Island or Ireland? Always thought it was the Tricolour that was flown at the celebrations rather than the red hand of Ulster

It’s a public holiday in TFS but probably not observed enthusiastically by the red hauners. Not sure why not - they’d be up their knees in snakes if it wasn’t for Paddybhoy.

Nah - it's island-wide.  That's why the union flag has a St Patrick's saltire in it.  There's also an orange lodge in glasgow who hold an annual St Patrick's day celebration.
