There is a 25 year old left back currently playing regularly in the English Premiership, cost £6 million and has over 200 career league games under his belt, mostly in the Championship who has previously been selected for a Scotland under 21 squad.

I make that 8 players who are current English Premiership regulars, are eligible for Scotland and who, for a variety of reasons, aren’t in the squad.

It’s a lot of talent missing, especially when we have so many injuries.

Can you please stop the { Player A }  must be better than { Player B}  because of their transfer values or because they play in England.

All good teams need balance.   Balance over physicality, pace, technique, invention.     Easily our worst performance from Strachan's last campaign was away to Slovakia.   A team crammed with 10's of millions of pounds worth of "English transfer fees"  but one of the most illiterate selections I've ever seen from any manager.    Cumbersome, easy to defend against and it was absolutely no surprise we got beat.

If we start with McBurnie tomorrow our chances of winning the game diminish.   Because he's considerably worse than McNaulty at involving our talented midfield.   He's considerably slower than Russell or Burke and hasn't the ability to beat a player or manufacture a chance.    The ball won't stick, he won't turn their back 4 and the ball will turnover.     Those that understand this basic fact have evidence on their side.

Without Fraser surely one of Armstrong or MacGregor fills in out wide and the rest of the midfield picks itself?

McGinn and McTominay sitting deepest with the aforementioned plus Forrest as the attacking midfielders

That's not a fact, that's just like your opinion man.

McBurnie's hold up play is good and he is proven at a higher level than McNulty

Plus there's an argument to be made that the dynamism and guile of our forward thinking midfielders is now our best attribute.

We no longer need someone to run the channels and do the hard yards. Just get someone in to finish the chances they will no doubt create

It's a fact if you watch these footballers play.

Can you outline the games viewed that you've arrived at "McBurnie's hold up play is good"?    In fairness I only have the Scotland games.

Jesus Christ mate, you’ve been making this Niemi joke on various threads in here for about a fortnight. It’s was a funny one-off ladsbible type gag at the time....being regurgitated by yer da every time a Scotland squad gets announced....less so. Half-a-dozen times in the same sub-forum by the same user....barely a snigger.

Wow. That's a clampin' alright...

Anything less than 3 points here and it is a disaster.

Losing one of the best left backs in Europe and the other with potential to go on to be one of the best left backs in Britain is a huge blow. McKenna too.

Add in our horrific results against similar teams, poor starts to qualifying campaigns, our strikers dont have any international goals between them and the fact this mob are rotten, it is safe to say i have the fear for this one.

Don't care about the performance, a scrappy 1-0 win does me fine, preferably no more injuries and then onto San Marino.

Billy Rubin here, absolutely begging for the egg to hit his face.

Coming across a bit Peppino here.

Not sure what to expect from this lot, yes we probably should be beating them but home draws with Romania and Poland would point to them being hard to beat in their own stadium, whether that is down to their organisation, the pitch being a leveller and the low temperatures not so sure.

Astana were not easy for Celtic to overcome either. I would be happy with a 1.0 ugly victory if it means getting off to a good start.

Cheers. I thought the BBC used to show away qualifiers.
Used to, not for a while though. UEFA now sell the rights as a job lot so Sky picked all the rights up (except the England games and one other game per round which are on ITV if it's the same contract they had for the World Cup qualifiers).

Any idea how it compares with Strachan’s squads?

Strachan was a wee bit more difficult because he'd regularly name pretty big squads, so it was hard to differentiate between who'd dropped out and who just wasn't selected.

Anyway, here are the dropouts from his final six squads:

  • Slovakia and Slovenia: 4
  • Lithuania and Malta: 4
  • England: 1
  • Canada and Slovenia: 4
  • England: 0
  • Lithuania and Slovakia: 1

It's worth noting that there was only one friendly in this period, which was also the first game of the break. The fact that a couple of the squads were only for one game also played part in fewer call-offs. I couldn't find anyone who pulled out of more than one of these six.

Could Matt Targett  opt to play for Scotland again? He switched from Scotland U19s to England U19s a few years ago. He should be eligible to play for Scotland at senior level.

That would be some sell.

"Here random English fella.  You fancy flying out to Kazakhstan for a wee game?  The chances are you'll never play for Scotland again as we have many, many left backs that are much better than you, but we're stuck for this one qualifying game".

Calm doon.  Shinnie at left-back will be absolutely fine.
