The problem is that he doesn't hit a Panenka. I don't know if he shat the bed or was just trying to roll it down the middle, but either way, that's not a Panenka. It's classic dense Scottish football thinking that if he hits it left and the keeper saves it, or if he'd hit a Panenka properly, there wouldn't have been criticism. There's a reason you don't see many of them struck, and that's because it's a risky penalty to hit. It's a showboat penalty, to make you look good and the keeper a bit daft. Looks great when it comes off though. As his manager said, if you're 3-0 up and cruising then why not? But st Mirren needed 3 points anyway they could get them last night, and a decision to take a high risk penalty was a poor one in the circumstances. The only small credit you can give him is that he judged that the keeper would commit, and he got that spot on. Indeed the keeper committed to such a level that even a crap Panenka would have succeeded. Jesus Christ man. No source, no reference, no relevance to direction the ball was hit, no relevance to Panenkas, nothing. Try this: a study of all 459 penalties in the French and Italian leagues 1997-2000, published in 2002, showed 70.1% hit to the right were scored, 76.7% hit to the left were scored, and 81% hit down the middle were scored. It's the first statistically significant study of penalties scored in ordinary play in league matches that I found in the 5 minutes I spent looking.
